You already posted this in the enclosure part of the forums, but I'll answer in both anyway.. here is why people don't use the CFLs

not all CFLs are bad
If the bulb is a safe one, provides the correct amount of UVB (without UVC or excessiveUVA) and kept within the right range (the UVB doesn't go very far) the fixture isn't all that important either (so long as there is no glass or plastic between the bulb and the cham)

No compact will ever give out enough uv for a chameleon and not over a large enough area. Linear bulbs all the way!
