Uroplatus phantasticus eggs

I just had my first egg hatch. I haven't cared for gecko babies in several years, and I can't remember the timing after the first shed when the babies are supposed to eat. I have my little guy in a small deli cup with paper towel/sticks for now.

I'm pretty sure they're supposed to eat their first shed and then be ready for a meal within a couple days. I opted to pick the skin off the little guy with tweezers because it wasn't coming off in one piece (hopefully I didn't doom him!).

Anyone know of a care sheet with specific reference to timing for phantasticus newborns? I can post pictures if anyone's interested.

And here he is finally with some color after I removed the botched shed with tweezers:

Are you sure you have U.phantasticus? For a hatchling to not have a tail is very strange. Just from the pics it appears you have U.sp.nov.aff.ebenaui (what everyone thinks is ebenaui in the US).

Check out my signature for a link to the UIC for more info. :)

Stunning little geckos regardless!

Cheers,

Luis

I lied - I don't have any pictures of the parents. He doesn't seem to be interested in the baby B lateralis so I started feeding him termites. Still growing strong.

Well I never took pics of the parents, so that's a no-go. After googling U. ebenaui I agree they are in fact ebenaui offspring. I did not realize the hatchlings would have a different, stumpy tail compared to the phantasticus. So I learned something then.

The young one has shed twice now and is eating/pooping regularly. I had to move him into the basement since it's gotten warm and humid upstairs and hits 79 in the original room regularly now.

The other three eggs pictured haven't hatched yet. I don't know whether the embryo died. Do the eggs turn a different color or dessicate pretty quickly if they're not viable anymore? We're almost at two months after the original hatching. I'm not touching them, just misting them every other day to keep the soil they're in moist.

Here's an update: none of the other eggs hatched unfortunately. The one that did is still growing strong and has a great appetite. I had been feeding her one or two roach nymphs every other day and then I decided to give her a house fly this week and then it was gone in 24 hours! So I may have actually been underfeeding her this whole time, but she's still doing great. She has shed I think three times in total now.
