Hey everyone,

Cage Type - screen cage, 4 feet high, 1 1/2 feet wide, 2 feet long. Pothos/ fake plants combo.
Lighting - 100 watt spot heat lamp, compact UVB (i know the dangers of these bulbs I and waiting to receive a linear tube UVB bulb in the mail)
Temperature - ambient air temp is 60, basking spot is around 95, night time temp is unknown.
Humidity - 50% I use a home made dripper to maintain humidity levels.
Plants - Im using pothos and fake plants
Placement - located in my living room so its somewhat high traffic, it stands 8 feet from the floor
Location - West coast of BC

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Male Veiled Chameleon around one year old has been in my care for 8 months.
Handling - I rarely handle him because hes very aggressive.
Feeding - I feed him around 7 crickets a day everyday and gut load with cricket food made at a local pet store in my area.
Supplements - I dust every day with rep-cal calcium with D3 and rep-cal multi vitamin twice a month.
Watering - I use a home made dripper and mist 2 times a day
Fecal Description - urnates are white and feces are moist and brown
History - n/a
Current Problem - 2 days a go I feed my cham a few chunks of banana. 1 day ago he stopped eating and looked bloated and stopped moving around his cage and began gapping his mouth. he passed a large bowel movement that day that had look like banana with undigested crickets in it. he began moving a bit more and ate only 2 crickets but continued to gape his mouth. Im pretty sure he has URI because he has clear bubbly mucus in his mouth and the temps in my house drop pretty low at night. he is also going to sleep a lot earlier then he normally would. Im not sure what to do or how to fix it seeing as i live 2 hours away from any form of vet. i have increased his basking temp because i read this helps but what else can i do?

Not to give you a guilt trip, but we live 1.5 hours away from our herp vet, so I do understand. Chams with URI's can go downhill very quickly if not taken care of, so I feel it is imperative you get him to one ASAP

If this is a URI a vet visit is definitely in order, but in the meantime you might try this https://www.chameleonforums.com/treating-lri-uri-warm-22945/

He will need medication and a couple of thread below this is one named LRI which says warm mist helps when doing meds for this. Maybe your vet could call a local vet for meds so you could get them.

thanks for your responses!

sooooo... its been a day and he has started eating again, i have yet to see him drink, but he has naps during the day and and is still gaping his mouth. I am going to follow the instructions from the LRI thread and ChrisnLisa's instructions. the only time i have free to take him to the vet is 4 days from now. do you think this is okay?

If thats the soonest you can go it will have to be. Its good that hes eating but you need to make sure he is drinking. Napping during the day isn't a good sign either. Is he staying under the basking light? It is a high temp and will dehydrate him more. Let us know how it goes.

I would carefully clean out the mucus from his mouth whenever it starts to build up. The other poster is correct, sleeping during the day is not good.

You may wish to try and giving him a shower. I do this by putting a large plant in the tub, and aiming the stream of water at the wall so it bounces off and hits the tree. Do not spray your chameleon directly. I use fairly warm water, not hot. Keeping the door closed will also keep the steam in which may help for the time being. i suggest staying in there with him so no unforseen problems arise.

I would stress to the vet how urgent this may be, fake cry if you need to  , they may be able to squeeze you in earlier.

Also, could you post some pics of the cham, and also with the mouth open?

hey i thought i would just thank you guys for the help! I followed the instructions from the LRI post. I gave him a few warm showers and he seems to be back to his old self. eating well, drinking and no longer gapping his mouth.

thanks tons!:D

any chance he vomited up the banana and crickets? Often, the vomit is mistaken for a bowel movement - it's usually packed into a very similar shape.
