*UPDATE* Chameleon dreaming? Vet Check

So guys I am back from the Vet check up! As you may or may not know these past couple of days I posted some concerns I had with my two juvi veiled. As as suspected it's a respiratory infection and thanks to you guys, online research and my keen observation skills I managed to catch it at the beginning.

I was enlisted a course of antibiotics, Enrofloxacin (Baytril) and I was instructed to give 0.02ml for 5 days along with a short course of BSP multivitamin drops.

He should be sending me the results of the fecal tests tomorrow morning or later on tonight. Before the check up Eranikus (male) ate a cricket and managed to poop as well.

The vet told me that it was not necessary to get critical care but advised that if they are not eating normal insects I should probably pick some. Now I am itching for 4pm so the shops will be open and go buy a canister

Also, a small bonus, the check up, antibiotics..etc, surprisingly, was not as expensive as I imagined :D :D

I will keep you guys updated on their recovery

Here's to their health and quick recovery!

Glad to hear that you caught it early. Observation is everything with chams...;)... They hide illness very well. Definitely keep us updated. I hope that your sweet babies feel better soon!

Thank you so much Blink! I've been very thankful ever since their arrival, it keeps me away from the computer screen they need so much attention.

Mysteriously, the day I needed Critical Care is the day everyone is out of stock. I checked 3 different exotic pet stores and 2 veterinary clinics. No one has it. The only doctor who had some spare was off-duty and I don't have his email or personal contact info

Luckily though I talked with some of my local herp friends and a trusted contact gave me a recipe that has worked for his sick geckos (has been breeding for 4 years).

A small mixture of cricket, dubia and mealworm innards mixed with water, some calcium and multivitamins. All I have to do is mix that together, string out the exoskeletons and feed via a small syringe.

Hopefully this will work. If I end up successfull I'll post what I used, it might be handy to know for other owners in my position :p

Yeah, I've hear of something like that called Bug Juice. I think quite a few forum members have successfully made and used it from what I've heard. I've personally never tried. It would definitely be handy to have a recipe! You might think about adding pedialyte for extra hydration.

I think a forum search will bring up our bug juice recipe. The one for the geckos sounds pretty good as a start. I would still try that before using critical care...its more specific for insectivores.

Yes! That's what it was called "Bug Juice" :D It's been on the tip of my tongue all day and I tried looking for it but I couldn't find it.

How many times should I feed them this mixture you think? 3-4 times a day?

Are you sure of the dosage? My 60g quad is on Baytril, .02 mL s. That's .02cc.

Baytril comes in different strengths and my vet used injectable Baytril and diluted it. He had been given the same dosage of Baytril by another vet. That Baytril a pink syrup, again .02 mls for a 60g animal.
One mL (cc) is a diabetic syringe filled.

Yes actually you are right, it is 0.02ml and I administer one drop of it everyday. I shall correct that in the first post. I must have mistyped or got confused. So many things are going through my head right now

This morning I made some bug juice. They seem to like it or just acceptable towards it. It did not come out too pasty or chunky like I imagine, more like a juice with pulp

This is the recipe I used;

  • 10g of mealworms
  • 10 medium crickets (1cm)
  • 2 big dubias (Nymphs around 4.5cm)
  • 0.5g of Rephasy SuperCal NoD
  • 10ml of water
  • 6 drops of diluted BSP multivitamins

I grinded all the insects in a separate bowl using a pastel and mortar until I had a nice mixture of goo and exoskeletons. I grinded them quite a bit for around 2-4minutes to ensure everything is out. I mixed in the water and mixed it together using an old clean spoon. Afterwards I strained it using some mesh and got all the juices with no exoskeletons. Mixed in the calcium powder and with a syringe I dropped around 6 drops of multivitamins and mixed it thoroughly together

This should last out the entire day.

Man the amount of work I am going through to care for these chameleons

**UPDATE**

Third day of antibiotics and the male seems to be doing great! Still a little wobbly.

The male is displaying a nice green color and today he took 2 crickets dusted with calcium and 2 mealworms! The male is also drinking on his own :D

I am a little worried about the female.

She has retained shed on her sides and its been about 4 days. Small pieces do come off but the majority is there. There is also a little shed on her head. Her turrets are a little sunken so I think she is dehydrated.

Today she ate some good amount of bug juice and I will administer the juice again in a few hours. After heavily misting she drinks up the water. I have observed her lapping it up off the leaves.

I am also a little worried that she has been a black coloration for a long time now, since yesterday through the night and this morning. She turned this color after I administered her antibiotics.

I am beginning to suspect that she might not need it and that its doing more damage than good. That or its because she's dehydrated.

I will give her a warm shower today
