Ultraviolet Sterilzation?

Would a Ultraviolet Sterilzation Light (the type used in ponds or Saltwater Tanks) work in a Misting System water supply ... such as a reservoir or even an inline UV Sterilizer? I did a search and not much popped up from it. I would think it would keep all the good minerals in play, but kill off in microscopic organisms. Thoughts?

::Bump:: No one has any input on these?

I would think unless you are recycling water you would not need it. I use water strait from the tap in my misting system without issue.

Only clean water should be in the res to begin with. The only other reason I could think of to use it would be if you had a huge res and kept water in it for a long time.

As long as the water is cycled through it fast enough no need to worry. Save the $$$

I got you .. I use a 5 gallon bucket and replace 5 gallons a week. My consideration with this is .. An RO system strips the water to a degree where no minerals would make it through to the Chams. So, I thought, if all we removed was any microorganisms, then they'd still get all the beneficial minerals etc. supplied to them.

This was just an example of a UV light. There are many others that are as cheap or cheaper than a RO system... Besides, I use an RO for my fish tanks, but I have to add the minerals and vitamins back to the filtered water before water changes on my tanks.

Got it, I would think the water from the tap is sufficient with all the minerals etc. It should be cleaned of organisms by chlorine etc.

I would agree with Ryan....I think the general rule should be: If its clean enough for you to drink...it good enough for you your chams....

I agree ... please understand I'm not trying to argue here. Standing water, especially that is being warmed by a heater is a perfect breeding environment for harmful micro organisms.

So, in essence the water we drink is fairly fresh, coming straight from the tap for our consumption. Where as water in the bucket can sit for a few days unless you're replacing it daily, no? By then all the chlorine has evaporated and the water can begin housing pests again. (have you ever noticed a slight film on the inside of the res. when you're refilling it?)

I guess where I was going with this is... has anyone used a UV sterilizer on their water for their chams? Are their any reasons I would not want to use one?

Here's a good bit of info on them.

This little beauty would be perfect for reservoirs.
