Tug of war.

This is Pat. I don't feed him HWs on plants very often because they get a good grip.....

Pat decided on giving up :( That is the second time a HW has gotten the better of him..... but I didn't have a camera handy last time :D

To avoid this sort of thing happening, it is a good idea to put the worm on the screen of the cage.

Hornworm 1 - Pat 0!

Aww, poor Pat! Those hornworms must have such a strong grip! I would think that the Melleris can bite and pull really hard too, so that worm really didn't want to be lunch!

wow... Pat didnt get that guy off??? Looks like he should have ripped it in half!

I normally tong feed the hornworms if they're for the big guys. Them jumbo sized HWs do have a serious grip!

Great videos! I don't think I've ever seen so much determination to get food off a branch. I'm really bummed Pat didn't win, though.

put the HW on bio vines or the side of the screen cage! with the vines they will eventually just bite all the way down and rip the feet off, and the screen cages dont allow the HW to grip super strong. Also in my case i put them on the pipe cleaner and they have no grip at all.

Such great determination. Too bad it didn't pay off immediately. Anyways, thanks for the videos; I enjoyed them thoroughly.

I do practice these feeding techniques ;)

I hand-feed hornworms, and am always amazed at their grip. Last time, Thaxter got the worm off my hand all right, but he was leaning way forward to do so and the mass of the worm combined with the awkward position caused him to lose his balance. I saw it coming and intervened so he didn't tumble, but he was a bit taken by surprise and dropped the worm. Once he pulled himself together, he had his treat.

I loved the video - thanks for sharing! My meller's never let me get the chance to put the hornworm anywhere! They are already waiting for me and zap it the second I come close enough! :D

Why didn't Pat use his tongue?

He did. I didn't film him shooting the worm because I put the worm into the cage and started to feed other Chams.... Then I heard him thrashing around and grabbed the camera. He was fighting the worm for some time. About two minutes.

2 minutes of fighting for your food and all you get is a sprained tongue?

I hope you gave Pat another EASIER one...

Well, I am thinking if it took Pat two minutes of tugging and pulling to get his supper off a twig (or not), just think how hard the whiplash was to his tongue when it failed to retract without anything on it. :p

I have seen my Chams do this sort of thing a few times and each time they have shot the item, it didn't move and they walked over to the item and pulled the food item from the branch. I have not experienced any tongue issues with my Chams so far.
