Trips to Madagascar

Has anyone been on vacation/ taken a trip to Madagascar? I would love to tour the country & go trekking/hiking/climbing, and obviously see chameleons and other wildlife while I'm there (I read that November is the best month for chams, is this true?).
My main question:
Is it recommended to go with a tour guide/ what is the best one (who did you go with and what was your experience)?

We have been to Madagascar twice. Our first trip was in last of November and first of December 2012. Our second trip was November and December 2017. If COVID hadn’t caused us to have to cancel our trip, we would be in Africa right now and for the next three weeks. Here’s some info and pictures from our first trip.

OMG thanks for this these photos are amazing. Sad to hear you can't go this year, but hopefully 2021 will be better.

Is it relatively safe to go there and explore? Or do you recommend staying on the resort?
