I just got home from a 7 day fishing trip to Alaska. We were on the Southwest end of the state on the Nushagak river (about 30 miles upstream from Dillingham on the map) fishing for King Salmon as they came in to spawn. It was the best trip I've been on in a long long time. We went through a group called Alaska Kingfishers (.com), and rented the whole camp out for a 4 day period. There was 15 people in our group, and they had about 13-14 people there making sure we were comfortable. It was really remote, but they had amazing accomidations out there (that they bring in and out of there for a 5 week fishing season every summer). Great meals, showers, and about 12 hours a day of fishing, or more if you wanted it. The fish we kept ranged from about 22 up to 35 pounds each. Anything under about 20 pounds we threw back, and you could only keep one per day (4 per year is Alaska's rule). Probably 75 percent of what we caught was right in the 22-27 pound range, not much smaller, and not much bigger. The strangest part for me was the sun not going down until about midnight. You would go lay in bed at 11:30PM, and you were struggling to fall asleep because of the light. Weird. Then it was light again around 3 or 4 AM, I almost never saw darkness in the whole time we were there. The sun being up all the time also meant that the temperatures didn't drop much at night. It was mid 50's during the day, and about 50 at night. We flew from Dillingham to the actual campsite in small 4 passenger planes that landed on the river (on floats) right at the campsite. It was a blast. We saw several moose every day, and bald eagles all over the place. A few people in our group saw a mother and little grizzly bear just about 1/2 mile up from our camp. Here's a few pics of the trip. These are mostly of my brother and my dad (the guys cleaning the fish are all guides that worked there). Didn't get any of me, I was the one with the camera. Enjoy!
