Trip to Alaska

I just got home from a 7 day fishing trip to Alaska. We were on the Southwest end of the state on the Nushagak river (about 30 miles upstream from Dillingham on the map) fishing for King Salmon as they came in to spawn. It was the best trip I've been on in a long long time. We went through a group called Alaska Kingfishers (.com), and rented the whole camp out for a 4 day period. There was 15 people in our group, and they had about 13-14 people there making sure we were comfortable. It was really remote, but they had amazing accomidations out there (that they bring in and out of there for a 5 week fishing season every summer). Great meals, showers, and about 12 hours a day of fishing, or more if you wanted it. The fish we kept ranged from about 22 up to 35 pounds each. Anything under about 20 pounds we threw back, and you could only keep one per day (4 per year is Alaska's rule). Probably 75 percent of what we caught was right in the 22-27 pound range, not much smaller, and not much bigger. The strangest part for me was the sun not going down until about midnight. You would go lay in bed at 11:30PM, and you were struggling to fall asleep because of the light. Weird. Then it was light again around 3 or 4 AM, I almost never saw darkness in the whole time we were there. The sun being up all the time also meant that the temperatures didn't drop much at night. It was mid 50's during the day, and about 50 at night. We flew from Dillingham to the actual campsite in small 4 passenger planes that landed on the river (on floats) right at the campsite. It was a blast. We saw several moose every day, and bald eagles all over the place. A few people in our group saw a mother and little grizzly bear just about 1/2 mile up from our camp. Here's a few pics of the trip. These are mostly of my brother and my dad (the guys cleaning the fish are all guides that worked there). Didn't get any of me, I was the one with the camera. Enjoy!

SUSHI!!! That looks like an incredible time! I have always dreamed of a trip to Alaska. So how many pounds of that delicious meat did you bring home?

Sweet Tyler!

If you want to catch a real fish, then come down here to Florida.
The monster Snook are starting the summer spawn!
Not to mention poogies and mojarra are running like crazy.

I ended up bringing just under 50 pounds of meat home (they vacuum packed it right there at the camp and had dry ice to get it home). We each brought about the same. We're hoping to be able to go back in 2 years, my uncle in Denver has been going every other year for a while now, and he's the one that invited us along. I had to call my wife on the way home and have her clear out freezer space (yeah, I went without her). Unfortunately, I'm not a big salmon eater, I just like to catch it, so most of the meat is going to my wife's family, and a few guys at work.

Dream???

Hey man for the price of one of a couple of peoples chams for sale you can get a plane ticket to Juneau or Anchorage. Don't dream...do it. You will be amazed at how magnificent that place is.

I lived way up north of there in Kotzebue for a year. If you are a native you get unlimited hunting and fishing rights. Although I'm not a native I did get to participate in cutting moose and caribou for meat packaging/freezing. You need to go up there in the winter time to go ice fishing. That is the most incredible experience you will ever have. It is nothing like ice fishing here in the lower 48. Maybe you could experience the Iditarod too!

I was actually pretty suprised by Anchorage... I kinda expected an old timers town with a bunch of murderers hiding from the law type of place, but being there was quite different... Lots of young people, a really busy mall we ate dinner at (complete with a Pacific Sunwear), and other suprising finds... It was interesting not to have a security check going from Anchorage to Dillingham (it was a small 20-25 person plane), but there were people carrying on rifles LOL.
