Trip, cham and setup update and pics (dailup warning!)

Chris Anderson

Dr. House of Chameleons
Hey everyone,

Haven't been around much lately due to an extended trip to Australia, as many of you know. The trip was incredible and I know a number of you asked to see a couple pictures so I figured I'd post some with some more relevant cham updates.

The trip was a vacation of sorts with aspects of scientific research (botanical and ornithological) worked into the itinerary. I was visiting and traveling with a famous ornithological artist and his wife, a well known australian botanist. We started the 6 week trip at their home on the Atherton Tableland South of Cairns at the base of the Cape York Peninsula. They have 200 acres of wet rainforest that backs up to national heritage property-quite a beautiful area. From there, we drove across to Kakadu National Park on the northern coast of the Northern Territory, then across to The Kimberley in Western Australia, down to the Simpson Desert south of Alice Springs and then back up to their home before flying back. With our two 4wd vehicles, we traveled over 13,000kms (per car) over a wide range of roads and got to see some of the most extreme habitats around. Of course, we saw a ton of animal life as well including a number of gecko, varanid, skink, python and elapid species. Anyway, here are a few pics for you guys to have a look at (I took 1500 pics total on the trip):

Anyway, I'm back now, finally. There was a major heat wave while I was away so I had some loses in my collection including my female spinsum, female hoehnelii, male uthmoelleri and a few others. I also lost the orange baby parsonii I was raising but this one was not growing regardless of the fact that it was eating so I'm not sure what happened there. It was a real shame to return to those loses and it will be hard to replace them but sometimes these things happen and we just have to push on and do everything we can with what we have. I have added a few new additions to my collection, however so I figured I'd post some photos of the chams too. These are just the new additions and a few of my other chams that have grown while I was gone.

My CB female Ch. (T.) melleri grew significantly and changed color from a whitish to green:

My female F. lateralis major has become receptive and is showing some excellent coloration as a result:

I lost my orange parsonii, as I mentioned above, but the green one has grown a ton and is now orange again. Not sure of sex still though:

srry about your losses but your setup is amazing that pic of the skink is funny lol

Sorry to hear you lost a few chameleons Chris. I am sad for you that you lost the orange Parsons in particular as he/she was extremely beautiful:(

great photo work, love your pic´s, nice cham colection you got there and god job on the new setup!!

Wow! Very Impressive!

Chris, So sorry you lost some of your chams while you were gone, but your pics are absolutely beautiful. My hubby and I would like to visit Australia some day. He's into saltwater fish and wants to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef. Personally, I'd be happy to see the Australian Zoo. :)

cage design

I saw the same design on the new issue of e-zine,I was wondering about the gaps along the doors it looks like you would have alot of bugs getting threw there.

The gaps are an easy fix. If you take som 1x1/2 square molding you glue/nail it to the inside of the door frame so that 1/2 inch of the 1 inch sticks out. The door will then hit this when it is closed. If there is still a gap you can then apply door/window insulation to this (The rubber stuff).

Frank

Thanks for all the comments. Glad everyone liked the pics!

The gaps around the doors of the cage, as mentioned, are easily fixed. I'm not a carpenter so I wasn't able to get them as exact as the could potentially be. It would be easy to add weather stripping along those sides to fill those gaps.

Hello! I have been some time now searching ways to stack up chameleon cages and came up on several ideas and one of them you seem to have accomplished! Lol. In your old setup with the black metal shelves how did you manage water drainage?? This seems like a good plan but having the light fixtures right under a cage that drips water when misted seems to be a bit hazardous.. My question is how did you manage??? Thanks!!!

Sorry for the delay, was in the process of moving cross country and didn't have internet access.

I would recommend getting corrugated plastic roofing panels, cutting them across the folds and attaching the front to the bottom of each rack level using zip ties. You can then suspend a gutter at the back and have the rear of the corrugated panels go into the gutters so that water runs down the corrugated sheets and into the gutter, which you can have empty on one end.

Hope that helps,

Chris
