Too Hot

Hey guys it's getting hot over here in CO and Yoshi's cage is getting pretty hot... he's lethargic and irritable. I've been misting his cage with cold water to raise humidity and lower temp but it's not doing too much. Also I'm putting cold water in his fogger. Solutions/suggestions??

I've lowered his basking light from 150w to 100w and I'm planning to go down to 75w...

What are your temps? Your bulb wattage is to high. Replace with a 40w to 60w and check your temps again.

Use a timer to turn your basking light off during the hotter part of the day. He really only needs it to warm up first thing in the morning. His UV light will be enough once he's warm. Is your room hot too? You'd have to cool the entire room as well.

Nah my room was the coolest room in the house BEFORE we got him...

His basking temp was 95-100 with 150w. Nothing changed with 100w. Now we're using my leo gecko's old 75w that put out about 90-95. As for his ambient... about 70-80 with humidity that I'm constantly screwing with

I can't do a timer that turns off one light and not the other... but i can turn it off some time during the day... he visits his basking spot on and off in the day though.

Hah. Easy to say for a Floridan. I'll see how my 75w works first and then I'll see if I need to lower it. I also heard that incandescent bulbs work well for basking...?

I'm in NY and all I use is a 40w bulb and UVB bulb . I have to turn my basking light off by mid-morning to noon cause my room is the attic and it get's on the warm side up here . I have my oscillating fan blowing towards their cages ( course , this mean I roast , but it's the price I'm willing to pay for my girls ) .

Oh wow that must suck. I understand... I spent 3 months two summers ago cleaning out my grandmother's attic with temps over 120 degrees wouldn't be surprised if it got over 150 sometimes...

Yeah ... so trust me , when he says go down to a 40w or 60w , listen to him . I've learned quite a bit from listening to these folks .

Haha. Yep the reason I say is it's Colorado and in case you've been here our climate is pretty unpredictable... it could be 100 degrees one day and down to 60 the next. Clear skies in the morning and hail in the evening. Thats why I commented. But I'll switch if it breaks 95 in his basking... lower preferred.

Im in south Florida very hot here, I'm only running a 25w basking bulb.

Clear skies in the morning and hail in the evening. Thats why I commented. But I'll switch if it breaks 95 in his basking... lower preferred.

You might even need to consider strategies to cool your cage like putting freezer blocks under it to create a "cool" zone.

yes, is sure is! i dont have a basking light when it is so hot, all I do is mist the cage!

Are you talking about those ice packs you freeze and put in coolers ?? Hmmmm ... never thought of that . Tyvm for the idea .... right now my chams are getting my fan and I'm getting the feeling of a turkey in November .

I'm in Colorado now too! I use a 40watt and even that gets too hot in the afternoons lately. Anything higher than that and it would be way too hot. Luckily today the weather is so much nicer!

100 watt sounds really hot to me. If he's getting hot turn the basking light off. If he's too cold with no basking light at all then try a 15 or 25 watt. I wouldn't recomment misting with cold water. That wouldn't be any fun. Also if he's lethargic he might be sick.

Yup and you're very welcome, I have some called "freezer bricks" which are actually square (no round edges)...my plan if it gets too hot is to put them into the drainage pans under the cages. That will work with my set up because it's small, the cages are fabric mesh and the drain pans are not too deep.

I would be wary of putting them in the enclosure and I don't think it would be advisable to put them on top of the enclosure. I think it's important to maintain the "cooler on the bottom" environment. In a different set up it might be possible to set the cage right on top of the bricks.

if your that concerned you can pick up a cheap plug in thermostat that will turn your heat lamp on/off.. or put the lamp on a dimmer and adjust if accordingly.

I have seen these both at local hardware stores and are pretty much plug and go...
