i have a 5 month old veiled female veiled chameleon she currently has MBD which is being treated with liquid calcium and a UVB light. I've realized she's not eating and today after about a week i was holding her trying to get her to eat and she finally stick her tongue out and tried to eat the mealworm! but then it fell out of her mouth?! its like she can't keep it in her mouth??

MBD can interrupt normal control of the tongue and reduce the force with which the cham can hit the insect (which affects how well it sticks). The tip of the tongue has mucous-producing glands. If the cham is dehydrated the glands don't produce a moist "sticky" surface as well. Maybe put her in a container with the feeder so she can go right up to it and grab it directly?

If she can't keep it in her mouth then you have to be sure to keep it moist while it's out. If it stays out she will either bite it off, swallow it when attempting to get it back in or not be able to eat and it will be necessary to take her to a vet to get it amputated. If it was my chameleon I think if the tongue did go back in the mouth I would hand feed her for a while so she won't shoot her tongue out until she has time to recover from the MBD.
