Thanks for the tip, but I'm not hopeful of finding a cheap one in the UK! I do have an infrared digital thermometer, but a dual one would definitely be good. I'll have a look tonight - going to the hardware superstore to get a taller schefflera so I might find one in there.
Tiff is based in the UK, so this option would likely cause the viv to be too cold.
I use the dowels too and have had no problems with them being "slick", although the branches do look more natural.

You know, I have some bamboo rods in my viv, and I did wonder why sometimes Hugo seemed to slip! This makes perfect sense! I thought that if you were to use branches from trees they had to be treated first, to avoid possible infections?
As long as the limbs don't have sap and other oozing and they're not toxic like Oleanders they should be ok. I think fruit and nut trees make the most sense to be safe.
