thoughts about pheonix worms

What's ya'lls thoughts about feeding these to a baby veiled. I'm just thinking of options for those times when I can't find small enough crickets. Is 5/16" too big for a 3 1/2" baby?

Pheonix worms should be ok sometimes. As long as the 5/16" crickets are no larger than the space between his eyes they will be fine.

Phoenix worms are high in calcium but there are better alternatives as they stay fairly small and work better as a treat rather than a staple feeder. Staple feeders are gutloaded (crickets, roaches etc) and phoenix worms dont need gutloading.

Small silkworms are a better alternative and just try a variety of different feeders. As Jannb said the 5/16" crickets should be fine. :)

I'm keeping crickets as the stable diet for sure. Sometimes small ones can be out at Petsmart. They always have big ones when I go in.
There is a good reptile shop but its about 45 min to and hr drive from my woods. They only have crickets, mealworms and superworms. That's where I get a box of 1000+ superworms for my beardie, water turtles and my chickens love them too. Maybe they can order me a variety?

When I first started I relied on Petsmart too for my cricket supplies. I do use superworms but as your cham is a baby they would be too big at this stage.

I would talk to the good reptile store if you go there regularly and see if they can get in the smaller feeders for you, if not then you may have to order them online. It maybe worth doing that instead of the drive, (postage would be cheaper than gas and your time) there is quite a few good online feeder stores. Mulberry farms, Costal Silkworms etc depending on where you are located....take a look at the sponsors page and you could get them in one order. :)

Pheonix worms (soldier fly maggots) are fine for occassional use for a small chameleon. Too fatty for frequent use. No good (too small) for large chameleons.

Small silkworms are great for small chameleons. Being soft bodied, silkies can be larger seeming than the appropriate sized crickets and still be okay

I suggest not having a staple feeder at all, but rather a nice variety. Breed your own or order on line if local stores are inadequate. Always good to breed at least one bug for yourself, for those times when the stores run out, or the post is on strike, or theres a big storm....

Where do you live? Why don't you order online???? It's so much eaiser to have the feeders delivered right to your door.....cheaper, too.

I'm in AL. I used to order supers online and when I moved out in the country, the mailman would leave them near the mailbox instead of front porch. I had 2 whole boxes cooked in the sun. The reptile shop cost me less for a 1000 just gotta a road trip to get there.
I noticed Mulberry's cheaper than where I use to order. Think I'll use them and send them to the clinic I work at as long as they arrive M-F.
