Thermal burn?

Im very over protective, as Im sure many chameleon owners are, of the slight signs of illness I perceive from my veiled. After moving her to Baton Rouge from Houston i have to say shes adjusted perfectly. However, Im not sure if what Im seeing now is from a thermal burn to her head or from her inability to shed on the top of her cask. After measuring the temp of her bask I realized that it was waaaaay over, and have lowered the top of her canopy since. What concerns me are the dark lining of the cask, and again the inability to shed this skin. I will attach pictures here in a sec as they are on my phone and i have to upload them. Any advice would be much appreciated before I run off and spend a bunch of money at the vet for no reason. Thanks

Ok so I cant figure out how to upload pictures on here from an ipad or iphone any help? I saved them to my facebook wall as to copy the URL but it wouldnt let me do that either.

I'm sorry to say that I have no experience with ipads or iphones for this sort of thing. I am very familiar with Baton Rouge though and my nephew will be starting at LSU this year.

Can you access a site that's devoted to photosharing like PhotoBucket or Flickr? That might make it easier to copy the url.

They often can't shed some areas. In my experience, the casque is the most likely area for shed to hang around....

You can use the forum through Tapatalk, an app in the market. I paid for my version on Android and it was well worth it. You can upload pictures through it too. Might be easier for you in the long-run.

Ive been trying to figure it out this morning. I think im just going to take your advice and get tapatalk, but I thought when i originally came to the website it asked me if I wanted to download the app for my ipad? Am I crazy or does it exist?

Took a bit of work, but I got it working.

Here's a couple more. Let me know if y'all need any more angles to help. The more I look at the pics the more I'm thinking its just the color changing of the cask, but better safe than sorry.

Wow, she is incredibly beautiful! Wonderful greens and she looks lovely!

Is it the whitish patch at the tip of the casque you are concerned about? When did you first notice it? Is it possible it's the beginning of a shed or a piece that has failed to shed?

I don't know enough about Veileds specifically, I'm afraid, but it's definitely worth getting an opinion on here.

Thanks, that mean's a lot coming from a senior member on here. She's my baby!

It wasn't so much the skin that has been persistent not to shed, but the dark lines along the "eyebrows"? of the casque that have been concerning me. It is also darker towards the tip of the casque as well. It seems to focus on these "major" lines of the cask; the area I would think would be the most exposed or closest to the lamp from their angle.

The more and more pics I see of veileds the more I think this is just a normal coloration.

Im going to go with a piece of stuck shed, a good long warm shower should help clear this off. :)

She is very lovely by the way :) Good job with her.

The darker lines look like normal colouration to me, they aren't as irregular as a burn. Good catch on the temperatures though! How long have you had her? Probably worth searching through some Veiled pics on here just to reassure yourself.

Don't put too much stock in the 'Senior' label, I got it without even having a chameleon! Just shows who has no life beyond the board and their animals :p

Get her wet and lightly rub the area to see if it is stuck shed. Chams shed the rigid parts of casques, spines, rostrals, less easily because the skin doesn't flex, especially as they get older. If the patch comes off, you're good. If you see any discoloration under the patch, dab some Polysporin on it to prevent infection and to protect it while it heals. Now that you've adjusted your temps she should be fine. She's lovely!

Hello,

It looks like stuck shed to me. If it was a thermal burn it would be more spread out and the edges wouldnt be so crisp. I hope you get what I mean. You can clearly see white scales, a brun would half burn some other scales around it too. a bit of warm water on a Q tip should sort it out.

I know as males mature they will develop dark "edge markings" on their faces...maybe it happens with females too and I just haven't seen pictures. There's nothing unusual looking about your chameleon's skin. She's very pretty indeed and those are great pictures.

She's in a guest bedroom with a shower. I'm thinking about letting it run filling the room with steam. I'll let the shower run for half an hour or so. What do y'all think? The room steams up rather quickly, and the automatic fogger usually shuts off about ten minutes into a shower. Especially since it been raining so much today; with the small crack I leave in the window it's already pretty humid.

My vet used a damp cotton bud to help my chameleon with a stubborn bit of shed on her chin, unlikely to need a full shower for a healthy girl like yours.

She really is beautiful, please stick around the forum to show her off more!

I most definitely will. I can't tell y'all how much I appreciate everyone's help. I spend so much time reading random stuff online, but now that I've found this forum I'm pretty sure I can find just about anything there is and then some. It always feels good to meet others that have the same passion for chameleon husbandry that I have. Thanks again. I'll let everyone know how the q tip idea goes tomorrow when she wakes up. Oh, she's about a year and half by the way.

So after I took her outside, which by the way seemed to make here extremely happy, I used damp squares of toilet paper, but I didn't want to rub too much and irritate her. There still is a little bit of skin that needs to come off, but I thought I'd wait until tomorrow to try again.

fwiw, i don't see any signs of a thermal burn. i do agree with mild dermatitits/stuck skin which should easily clear up. a tiny dab of neosporin should do the trick either way, 1-2x daily for a few episodes.

If it stays there until the next shed, it's not a problem. It's really an aesthetic thing and you need to balance your desire for a beautiful chameleon against possibly stressing her out trying to get that bit of dead skin off.
