Ok so I needed to let some flies out of my cage so I took it outside and took all the plants out and opened the door... as I was taking the plants out I got a wiff if a horrible smell... I asked my husband if he farted... he said "No".. I started looking around to see what it was... it just wouldnt go away... like it was surrounding me... Well, It was.. it was my plants!!!!!! The soil smells like it is ROTTON!!!! What is going on??? I clean the cage everyday... I vacuum out the bottom and wipe it down with bleach solution, I clip all the dead leaves and get the poop out! What is going on??? Please.. even if you dont know what it is.. what do I do to fix it.. I have a money tree plant in there that I am actually takng out becuase it is to small now.. and then I have a ficus.. "the weeping fig" kind. I just put the ficus in there about 2 weeks ago. I have a screened cage with a 6 month old male panther cham....

I buy the $5.99 pots of hibiscus from Home Depot, and change them out every 4 months or so. If they have decent life left, I cut off the rotted roots and plant them in my yard. Darwin loved to eat the flowers and new leaves. With all the water going through them, they will eventually rot. I have them on grates with plenty of airflow, but it's just too much water I guess.

just a thought but maybe something in the soil, like a little bit of poop that ya missed or covered up?

Yeah I took it out and the roots were all rotted and smelled so so bad.. there were some holes in the side at the bottom of the potter that I was getting the smell out of. I think you are right about there being to much water. I went to home depot and they didnt have anything. The only thing that they had was HUGE ficus! I trimmed the plant and repotted it.. hopefully that works.. I have only had it in there for a couple of weeks.. bummer that it happened so fast.

Yeah I noticed that whenever my mister would go to work that a smell would come about the room. I just repotted my plants, put more holes in the bottom and put some rocks in the bottom before adding soil. And wahlaa smell is gone............for now.
