bought my friend a versicolor. it is freakin awesome. whish i woulda gotten myself one when i did. im leaning toward the fireleg but like the docility of the brazilian black. i dont want hairs thrown at me.

The fire legs are very docile, too. You can't get them to bite you. Plus they get big and look really cool! I have had many T's and those are one of my favs.

Only new world tarantulas have urticating hairs. Old world tarantulas do not have these hairs. I just recently got a baby ghost ornamental. The ornamentals don't have urticating hairs but they have a nastier bite. I can't wait for my baby to get big!

From wikipedia:

"New-world tarantulas (those found in North and South America) are equipped with urticating hairs on their abdomen, and will almost always throw these barbed hairs as a first line of defense. These hairs will irritate sensitive areas of the body and especially seem to target curious animals who may sniff these hairs into the mucous membranes of the nose. Some species have more effective urticating hairs than others. The Goliath Birdeater is one species known for its particularly irritating urticating hairs. Urticating hairs can penetrate the cornea so eye protection should be worn when handling such tarantulas.[5]

Old-world tarantulas (from Europe and Asia) have no urticating hairs and are more likely to attack when disturbed. Old-world tarantulas often have more potent, medically significant venom. Before biting, tarantulas may signal their intention to attack by rearing up into a "threat posture", which may involve raising their prosoma and lifting their front legs into the air, spreading and extending their fangs, and (in certain species) making a loud hissing noise by stridulating. Their next step, short of biting, may be to slap down on the intruder with their raised front legs. If that response fails to deter the attacker they may next turn away and flick urticating hairs toward the pursuing predator. Their next response may be to leave the scene entirely, but, especially if there is no line of retreat, their final response may also be to whirl suddenly and bite."

Cool, I also keep tarantulas. Manly poecs, I'd go with arboreal species. They are better and have better colors. Get a t. Gigas!

i've already ordered the brazilian but will probably end up with more knowing me:cool:. it is my first and i am gonna try and take it slow. my girlfriend is getting it as a gift for me and she dont like spiders! lucky me. i'll look into the arboreal species. i bought an a. versi for my friend and she freakin loves it! i should have gotten myself one too:(. i'll be happy with the black though. i think they are beautiful.

EEK! I guess we all have something we cant handle eh :)
While Theraphosids are an elegant and intresting spider in their own right, quite impressive most too, they just dont 'do it' for me, Its just spiders freak me out big time.
The thought of a creature in the house that can abseil down from the ceiling above you while you sleep, like a hairy ninja, gives me nightmares! :D

Pics I can handle though, how about it? :)

I'll just hide them in a tin of cookies. Customs will not see them, they will be TINY!!!

Thanks Lucky :)
Oh syn thats worse, hundreds of tiny ninjas lurking unseen.....*shudders* I wont sleep for days! :)
