Taking Cover

A tornado should be closing in within the next few hours, and they're asking us to leave or take cover. I dont know what to do with my chameleon!

I would Try to find some friend or a relative somewhere far(not the tornado zone) from where you live and take them there. I'm sorry you have to deal with that. Good luck.

i would put him in a shoe box with a soft towel, poke some holes in it for air.. tape the lid down.. and leave.

Pack them up like you are shipping them and hall A man get out of there.

Thanks guys for the advice. I ended up taking him out and putting him in the container he shipped in (which he was a little big for) with a heat pack. It was pretty scary hiding in the bathroom, but we made it out ok.

I am glad you both made it out okay. Tornadoes are really scary. The closest I've been to one was watching Twister. As cheesy as it sounds that scarred me for life. I will NEVER move away from the mountains because of this fear.

I personally live in tornado alley. I have a 55 gallon and 20 gallon fish tanks (non-evacuatable). Then I have 2 crested geckos who go in small plastic containers with washcloths and air holes, a parrot who goes in a cat carrier, and two guiena pigs who go in a minicage. Then all the animals plus all three dogs are piled into our storm shelter and we all wait it out. When I get a Cham I will get a travel cage too to make sure he has something to be put in.

I know its already passed but just figured I'd share what we do.

Scary! i would never be able to leave all my pets! ahh i'd pack everone up and head for the hills!

Glad your safe!

Same here! Everyone else was running to the bathroom and I was looking for the dog! It's not like they can fend for themselves in something like that.

I got on here to ask the same question. I'm in KY not to far from Louisville and Lexington. I have 4 dogs and my Cham. I'm not sure what to do with him because he is not letting me get him out of his cage. There is no lifting it either. I'm really worried about him. I'm about to get in the shower and pack up my important belongings to move them into the basement. Hopefully he will calm down by that point and I can get him out of there. Of all the days he has to be cranky. Good lord.

thats when you get a glovve, and help him off his branch and intoa box.

Yea, during moments like that which are emergencies, there's no room for being gentle. If you end up spraining an ankle in the process, so be it, but better to pry him off a branch quickly and save his life than to leave him in the cage to fend for himself. I would also keep a pair of thick gardening gloves nearby and use those if I ever need to get him out quickly.

I was thinking about this the other night, actually, when my building's fire alarm went off for a long time. I started to think that if it turned out to be something that I had to be prepared to grab my two dogs and as many pets as I can to run out of there. That's why I few years ago I made an emergency kit that I keep in the closet for the pets. It's a large plastic storage container with smaller containers for each animal, some towels, a hand-held mister, a roll of paper towel, a couple heat packs, and a small first aid-kit. So if I need to get out of the house quickly for a hurricane or something I can stuff the animals into the containers, grab the dogs, and hopefully have enough stuff to keep the reptiles and the dogs OK until we get to safety.

Everyone should have some emergency plan laid out just in case. Fires and natural disasters happen everywhere.

Well I just wanted to update everyone. Apparently a few touched down and we had a funnel cloud down the street but it didnt hit ground. I put my important belongings and all 4 dogs in the basement. I'm very thankful that nothing happened. Bodhi stayed upstairs. He is fine and the power didn't go out. He could tell what was going on. He and my dogs were all freaking out. They can since stuff like that. And the closer it got, the worse they got. I wouldn't know what I would do if something happened to him. I'm wondering if you can get insurance on an animal and his belongings. Not only would I be heartbroken, but that would be $2,000 worth of products. There is no winning in that kind of situation. I'd always had a plan in case of an emergency for my dogs. But I havent had Bodhi long enough to even think about it. The one good thing to come out of this is that I can now be prepared. The area I live in doesn't have anything like this happen. We are surrounded by mountains, so people think it's a big joke. It's scary as to how many people do not take things like this seriously. I'm praying for everyone and their animals right now. If anyone experienced the tornado's I would like to know how you handled it. Maybe what you did in an emergency can help others. Wishing all of you in the twister's path luck.

Glad that you all made it through the storms safe and sound!!! At least down here in hurricane land we get a couple of weeks warning!

Michelle

I had a panic like that a few years back. I moved all cages to the very center of the house (don't mind the mess, the sloshed water, the seeds, feathers and leaves, just move them). If they're upstairs, move them downstairs, if there is a basement and you can manage, do that. If you can't, LEAVE THEM. You're saftey is not worth risking. Really.

Emergency planning is important.

I have a small shipping box that will fit Shayna, and a cooler that Mort can be transported in. Each bird has a carrying cage in the same room, and the cats share a cage if they have to.

Sincerely,
Tyg
