Surprise at the petstore

I have only been able to find one Petstore near me that sells the right size crickets for my cham (Petland). Needless to say I went in today and I saw a well I guess it was a juvenile veiled cham when I was going towards the back. They were selling it for 169$.... seems very overpriced for a veiled no?

I went to a pet store near me and they were selling a juvenile translucent Veiled for $350 a juvenile Veiled for $125 and a baby jacksaon for $115... all way overpriced

My local petco and petsmart sometimes receive adult veiled for free from people that can't care for them anymore or don't want them. They usually look dehydrated and not so healthy but they sell them for 150+ sometimes. The 3 month olds they receive regularly sell for around 100.

That's not overpriced, depending if you are the general, consumer public, or someone here in the know about chameleon culture.

That's the cost of buying something and having the convenience of buying all the supplies with it, the help, etc.

That's called markup, it's how capitalism and your country was built and there's no problem with making a profit on something.

It helps pay for rent, hydro, electricity, heating, wages, advertising, shipping, care, food, etc.

Veiled chameleons here in pet stores are often 180-220$ and to most people who don't know how to get them from a breeder, that is a very fair price.

This isn't a supply and demand sale, although i do agree on pricing cause if they were cheap a lot of inexperienced people (including children) would buy them up and eventually give them up or even worse keep them until they die of husbandry mistakes. Why do you think green anoles cost 5 bucks !

Really? If they adopt them from the public, they are supposed to adopt them back out for free. If they paid a bunch of vet bills for it then it might be justified but if not then they really shouldn't be charging.

They do this all the time where I'm at. A couple weeks ago they had a couple adult iguanas that had been left in an apartment (intentionally) after someone moved. They were trying to sell them for $200 or something for the pair. Last time I visited they had a large amount of snakes 6-7 that someone had gave to them because they couldn't care for them anymore. I don't know if the guy sold them to the store or not but they had them priced at a large amount as well (can't recall exact amount).

it is overpriced. I could see your point if this was the only brick-and-mortar petstore that offered these animals... But it's not. As mentioned, other petstores are selling for half that price.

Green anoles cost 5 bucks because they get them WC and in droves lol. Matter of fact I saw about 10 anoles in a tank and there were probably more. The veiled well had only been there since Wednesday, looked around 9 inches from head to tail, and was in a tank too small for it obviously. I didn't look at it too long so I don't know how healthy it was. It was lime green for the most part I didn't see any stress colors. It did hide its face though when I was looking at it. Looked like a much larger version of my cham basically lol. But dam 169$... I feel that he's gonna be there for a while with a price like that. I got overcharged for my veiled and I got her as a baby. I got her for 89$ at the time. Making a profit is one thing but I doubt they paid close to 169$ for this chameleon. I'm glad they only got one though instead of stuffing multiple chams in that tank :S

Serious, talked to a guy working there. The whole reason I started asking was because they weren't placed in the normal reptile section. They had placed them up front where you check out. Can't remember if it was a petsmart or petco because I frequent both.

Edit: My brother just reminded me because he was with me. It was at a petsmart.
