I was in my exotic reptile store today purchasing a mister for my outside enclosure and was approached by one of the sales folks.

He had remembered me purchasing our Male Ambanja there several weeks ago.

Apparently, the owner is interested in breeding my Male with one of their large Ambanja females.

Rango has some gorgeous coloration that they remember and that started the conversation.

Has anyone done this before? I would assume there COULD be risks, like fighting, biting, etc, but with that said, any advice from you folks on this proposed "venture"?

do you realize how many babys could come out of that. and the money they could make. i would be asking for a small fee for the time they keep your cham away(typically you let them mate several times over a few days and for 2 free babies of your choosing (first pick)

but i guess its not all about the money all the time lol. thats just how i think because my job deals with making the most i possibly can so im used to it lol

Definitely take advantage of that my friend, your breeding without the long task of caring for the female and taking care of the off spring, the several babies lol. I would do what camaleonte said and get a couple free Chameleons out of it for your own fun and use. I think it would be worth your time. And maybe you can get some money out of it, who knows. I would barter for feeders.

Imagine not having to pay for crickets for 6 months or a year! (unless you breed your own then barter for something else)

You're going to get the most out of it if you barter for something they have a high mark up on and is easily replaceable for that same price that way it costs them less and you're getting a higher value for your time than you would have gotten in cash or babies. To them giving you a baby is like giving 100% cash in the price of the baby.

Some things to maybe think of:
Any number of things could happen to your chameleon during the time they have him.
However unlikely it is that a problem will arise, you may want to discuss the "What If's" Like what if he gets sick? What if he gets injured?

I would also ask that a fecal be done on both animals prior to breeding.

If you can make money on this opportunity, Do It!

There's plenty of risk you need to consider when breeding. One could have parasites and pass it on to the other. The male or female could have a prolapse and there is a chance there could be fighting and biting.

Exactly what fool2 think said I would ask for a fecal ,ur cham can get sick then what ? Get a clean bill of health first from his female ,then if u go forward I would ask for half of first clutch and half of second. Clean Bill of health is #1 though .if they don't want that don't do it.

If i were to do this, the female would come to my home. Let my cham go to a petstore? Not is this life time, what if he were sold by accident? I would have to make sure both chams are healthy and that the female comes to you or no deal at all. Then work on what you get our of the deal. First you need to determine what you want, babies, supplies, money? Always keep in mind there may not be any babies.

I know that I am NOT ready to go down the road of breeding Panthers myself. Rango is enough to take care of right now.

As I mentioned, this is a very reputable store and I MIGHT consider a couple of offspring, once they got up to a couple months old and past all of the "care" that it takes to get them to that point.

I'd have to have "feeders" for a lifetime if I considered crickets, etc in trade.

I would be more concerned about any injuries, bites, etc. that coould come from this.

I have seen the femaoe and she is BIG! She looks capable of doing some damage if it were to come to that!

I'll keep everyone posted BEFORE I do anything down the road!
