Spat out cricket

Hi everyone, just a quick query.

My 5 month old Ambilobe has, on two separate occasions now, fired at a cricket, chewed it for about 5 seconds and then spat it out. This first happened about a month ago and then again today.

The crickets are not too large for him and were dusted in just plain calcium. Oddly, he ate a cricket before the one that he spat out this morning, which was exactly the same size!

He never spits the hoppers that I give him out.

Just wondered if anyone had any experience of this?

Thank you! :)

What are you gut loading your crickets with?

Remember a cricket is like a jelly filled donut to a chameleon; the jelly being whatever that cricket ate and is still inside it's stomach. That stomach content influences what the overall cricket tastes like.

I've noticed that when i gut load my crickets with certain foods my chameleon will snag two or three, back to back; whereas with other food items after tasting just one cricket, he won't eat anymore; and i assume it's because whatever the cricket ate prior has influenced it's overall taste.

So perhaps this is the issue you're having………..

Hmmmmm, that's an interesting theory.....

I gutload the crickets with a selection of dark, leafy green vegetables, watercress, rocket, romaine lettuce, grated carrot, apples, oranges and dried mixed fruit. The hoppers have exactly the same.

Yeah, but maybe one crix ate only one of those items i.e the water crest before your cham ate him versus one that ate only the apple. The taste of the crix is going to be slightly different to your cham.
