Someone please help! :(

Hello, My name is Cynthia and I am new here. I own a female jackson chameleon, Darlene, and a male veiled chameleon,leonard. I noticed this morning that Darlene has a circle around her eye that is really puffy. Does anyone know what it could be. her vet cant see her until tomorrow morning and I worry that shes in pain.

Looks strongly like an eyelid edema to me, but could even be something else (an infection, foreign material...). I won't tell you without examining it carefully. Is it concerning both eyes or just the left one? Depends on the reason for this whether it's painful or not (edemas are not, but infections or foreign material stucked inside the eye definitely hurt - just to mention some options).

It's a good idea to visit a reptile vet.

It's only on this eye.
& yes ill be taking her to the vet first thing tomorrow because her vet is closed today. Do you know any further information?

that can be from an infection.

A reptile vet is needed to take a culture and see what if any, infection has set in, to determin what meds to use.

what is her basking temp> and how often you mist her? also, what is your supplement schedule?

It looks like it might be a sinus infection. Definitely a trip to the vet is in order.

it is definitely edema (fluid buildup) around the eye called periorbital edema. if that is the only place that you are seeing it, then it's a likely infection or some foreign body in the eye which is blocking the tear duct. sometimes vitamin A deficiency can predispose to this; I would fill out the how to ask for help form and give us the full history.

if it is the case, the duct often needs to be flushed during a procedure by your vet. the info is out there on how to do this, and since most vets do this commonly on all sorts of other critters, hopefully yours will oblige. there may be meds likely to follow, but meds alone usually won't take care of this. IMO, it's ok to wait for the appointment and not rush to an ER or something.

Her basking temperature is at 85.
I mist her 2-3 times a day.
supplement schedule : Plain calcium 1x per week, Reptivite (vitamins) WITHOUT D3 - 1x per week and Reptivite WITH D3 once every 6 weeks



I hope she turns out Ok.
Im so sad to see her like this.

i would lower her basking temp to around 80.

I would not give the multivitamin every week. more like once every 6 weeks.


get her to a vet and get some meds, she should be ok.

okay. do i just hold her in there?

get a plant,
put her on it.

turn shower on, aim shower head towards wall so water bounces off of it.

the water that bounces off the wall is where you put the plant.

it may look bad, but that skin does stretch and it shouldn't "explode". can you upload a new photo?

if you go to a drug store and get OTC Muro 128 5% hypertonic eye ointment, it MAY help the swelling some. just smear it all around the area and opening to the eye. it may help and shouldn't cause any harm.
