Hi,
I bought a female veiled from the pet store I work at about 2 months ago. We think she is somewhere between 8 months and a year old. She was in my store for about 5 months and during that time was EXTREMELY friendly and desperate to be held/carried around the store. She would go so far as to reach for us when we walked by her habitat. She always seemed her happiest when she was allowed to ride around on our shoulders. This is one of the main reasons that I bought her.
For the first month of having her at home, she stayed very friendly and liked to come out of her cage to hang out. In the past couple of weeks though, she has gotten very cranky and doesn't even want me to have my hand near her when giving her food or emptying her water catch. She will puff up and turn very dark and has hissed at me twice. Is there anything I can do to re-socialize her? I miss having her around!
She is living in a Reptibreeze with paper towel for substrate, three large branches to climb on, two bendable waterproof vines that I reshape every time I clean her cage, one fake standing plant and several hanging from the sides of her cage, and wrapped around her climbing branches and vines. She has a UVB bulb and a basking bulb, (the top half of her habitat usually stays between 80-90F during the day, she has several shaded areas near the middle and bottom if she needs to cool off) along with a dripper for water. I turn her lights on when I get up for work, usually between 7:30 and 9am, and they get turned off at 7:30pm, which is when I notice her going up to her sleeping corner. I keep a bowl under her dripper to catch the excess water that gets emptied twice a day, and I mist her cage in the morning. She is very good at getting water for herself, she will lick it off the leaves her dripper empties onto, or I will sometimes catch her licking the top of her cage under the dripper. She isn't super fond of crickets, but she will eat them two or three times a week. She prefers superworms, and sometimes likes the giant mealworms that my house mate's beardie eats. She gets salad once in awhile, but doesn't seem to care for it. (Except she will go DOWN on some kale every blue moon or so.) I use a multivitamin/calcium spray on her insects once a week.
Attached is a picture of my beautiful girl back when she used to like to come out and play. We named her Karma
