Snakes and Salamanders.

On the weekends I like to go out into the woods looking for snakes and salamanders. Not very many lizards around my neck of the woods though. Here is what I have found recently.

Ringneck snakes are littered all about the Appalachians at this time of year.

I always find the Red Back and Lead Back Salamanders which are very abundant and easy to find. If anyone would like to see pics of those Ill throw them up but they really dont get my gears cranking since they are so easy to find. Still many more species of Sallys and Snakes to find around here. Hope to get up into the higher parts and find some Timber Rattlers this summer.

It never gets old, Dean!!!

I was in Florida but I came back to MD. Gotta go where the money is and unfortunately I wasnt getting paid in FL like I do in MD. May try again in the winter time once I get laid off again. Was definitely a nice LONG vacation though:D

Kool!!! I love finding wild creatures.. Last year while I was camping, I got out of my tent and felt something fall and hit my shoulder, I looked down and it was the tiniest lil salimander. I wish I had got a pic.

It fell? Like out of a tree? I have read that some salamanders like the Green Salamander found here can be arboreal. Pretty neat, huh?:)

Ya it fell. Usually I find them on the ground and under the tent, rocks and what not, but this one fell straight outta the above :)

Very cool man! Ive found some blue spotted salamanders and red tailed salamanders here in MI, but theyre becoming harder and harder to find.

I found a ton of frogs when I was camping last year, I know they are super common but I still like em :)

I'm so jealous! When I go for walks with my girls we always try to find wildlife, but rarely manage it!

really neat! i live a little north of you in south central pa, and i have never ever found a spotted salamander..it makes me sad :( ive only ever found the black or the ones with the golden stripes down their backs...

Nice frogs, Hoj!!! Never gets old finding them either.

I was surprised when I started finding the big Spotteds, Ataraxia. I had found a couple small ones and then started finding the larger ones.

Amanda. I dont normally find them but since its spring that is probably the reason. They live in burrows underground that are already made by like chipmunks and other animals. They come out after nice cool rains also. They migrate to the same pond every year and they live 20 or so years!!! If there is a watershed near you that would be the place to find them at the moment since its raining. I found all of them under downed, decaying logs. Just look for them near a pond since they mate and lay eggs in those. You are probably seeing the Red and Lead Back Salamanders. They are everywhere at all sorts of elevations.

Here are some more for you guys!

Nice!!!!!!!!!!! I chased that damn thing around the creek for hours and couldnt get a good shot:D Or even catch him.

No Sallies up there? There are tons of species in my neck of the woods. My goal is to find one of each species of snake and sallie that are around here this year. The Queen Snake will be the hardest to find though. Also like finding turtles, frogs and the few lizards we have here.
