I don't see anything in your set up that jumps out at me that would cause her to close her eyes. I can tell you though to not feed canned meal worms. They are a poor food choice and you really should be feeding fresh, live prey. Maybe try a 25 watt and drop the basking temp 5 degrees or keep the 40 and raise the light up. It could be too intense for her eyes. If she is only a month old that is awfully young. Can you post some pics of her and the set up? If she continues to close her eyes during the day it is possible that it is not the lighting and she could be ill and you bought her that way from petsmart.

Alright. Well the lights are off but this is what I'm working with right now.

oh my gosh, is that her in the upper left hand corner in the first pic? she is super tiny. those lights seem very high up. I was assuming you had them on the screen on top. Are you sure your temps are accurate. Where are you measuring the 85 degree reading?

Yes that's her :p. I have the double temp/hydro meters at the very top in the center and then one thermometer in the bottom.

with the lights so high up and using the double dome you are not really creating an actual basking area like you would if the light was in a single dome where it is more concentrated. I would try turning off the basking light and see what kind of temps you are getting in the cage during the day. The light might be too intense for her eyes. It is really just a guess here and trial and error and see if any changes make a difference. There is also the possibility of her being ill like I said and nothing that you have done in the short time you have owned her. try the 25 watt and see what kind of temps you get and also with no basking at all. The glass tanks seem to hold the heat more so than the screen cages.

Alright I'll try that starting tomorrow and see what she does. Hopefully it's just the light. Most females (that I've read) don't ever even use a basking light. Just a UVB bulb. Maybe it's to much for her?

no that is not true about the basking bulb. Some people do not use basking bulbs when they are babies if the cage temps are warm enough. Yours does look very tiny and young. So lets try removing the basking bulb and see if that does not help. You will need a basking bulb for her as she gets older but people try and keep the basking temp in the low 80 degree range and not overfeed as these two factors are thought to produce eggs. are you sure she is a female? alot of times the petstores are wrong. If it is a male it will have little spurs or points on the back heel of the back feet.

Alright, glad to know that. I'll take that bulb out and see how she does. I'm assuming she's a she. I don't see any spurs, looks pretty smooth. I'll take a second look in the morning. I originally wanted a male but ended up with a female. I greatly appreacate your help. I'll keep you posted tomorrow.

Well woke up this morning and turned the light on and found her 5mins later like this.

I figured sweet she's awake, eyes opened, awesome.

Went to the pool after I put about 6 crickets in there and was gone maybe an hour, came home to find her like this.

Moved the leaf, she opened her eyes and then closed them again.

Whatchya think? Think she's I'll? Exhausted? She's only poo'd maybe once since I've had her.

Hmmmm that poo doesn't look good to me. It should be a nice smooth log with white at the end. Also the food doesn't look like its digested properly.

If i was you I would take her to the vet and get tested for parasites or infection. She's so small and frail looking, I would get her seen to straight away.

Angie.

Alright I figured. I appreciate it Angie. I still have her under a 14day gaurentee with petsmart so Im just going to take her back and pick up a Jackson. They looked more healthy.

I wouldn't take her back. She will die for sure. I recommend picking up a small screen cage (all screen) and keeping her outside in the shade of course as much as you can. If it's hot were you are at least a few hours early morning and a few hours late evening. When they are small a new UVB blub can be too strong for them and they will close their eyes. They say the coil bulbs are safe now but I still don't like them. I'd exchange that for a long tube style blub. Out side works wonders for these guys BUT NOT IN GLASS. She needs an all screen cage anyway. I never recommend glass unless it's very cold where you live and are an experienced keeper to keep the temps regulated.
