Usually, chameleons close their eyes when sleeping, and it's the best way to know if they are sleeping or not. After that, you can see their eyes being a bit more inside or sunken, but not that much. Finally, some chameleons will have brighter colors while sleeping, but this is not always the case!

Possible sleeping theory
Yemen is Saudi Arabia and so they nearl always have clear sky during the day and night so there is slot of full moon in that part of the world, so chams are always high up in trees so perhaps they alot of the time change a light colour to blend with possible moon light/moon light reflecting off leaves????

Basically all chameleons get brighter while sleeping, and they aren't all from Yemen 
Probably, the colors change during sleep because while they sleep they lose concious control over their color skin cells, and their default mode is to be light and bright. From a survival stand point, I don't think it helps to blend into a dark tree at night, but they've been around for a very long time so it's obviously working.

I do not possess the true answer to that Olimpia, but i have noticed that my sambava often sleeps in orange and yellow colors, and as soon as i start putting some light on him (like from a flashlight), his green comes back. And this happens even when he didn't open his eye. I just can't explain the phenomenon! *shrug*

I should have worded it to emphasize that that was just my theory, so I don't pretend to know the answer to anything! lol I've seen mine do that as well, my ambilobe is exactly the same. I've always figured that they woke up a little, but it would be interesting to see if their skin reacts independently even when asleep!
Although I have no answer about why the chameleon changes color at night I suspect that its less effort to be those colors at night when they relax.
Not for chameleons but since their color changing is somewhat similar its interesting...

lol! Well, you saw the picture of my Sambava sleeping, and you are right, even the slightest bit of anything and he starts turning green! It is hard to even get a pic of him at night cause as soon as I QUIETLY(or so I think it is quietly) open the door, he starts turning green and he never even blinks an eye!
