I checked up on my sleeping Chameleons tonight and snapped a few pictures of one of my Maroantsetra males. The first picture is his normal resting color earlier today and the second is when he's in sleeping mode

They look so awsome when their sleeping dont they.

I occationally use an LED light and shine it on the body only of mine to take peaks of his awsome sleep colors. I shine it so a leaf blocks the light from his eye.

Hey Chris. He's a CBB from Connie Dorval and he was sold to me as a Maroantsetra. I know Maroantsetra and Sambava are very close to each other and have similar characteristics within the locales of Pardalis but I've also been wondering the last few months as his coloration comes in.

I still classify him as Maroantsetra since this site shows the different variations of Maroantsetra. Have a look and tell me what you think.

Its a difficult call. As you said, they are quite close to each other and are going to show some similarities. I've always considered the Tamatave and Maroantsetra to be more similar though, even though they aren't located as close. On the site you gave, I would question the locale on the animal in the top right of the Maroantsetra section to be Sambava as well. The animal does not appear to be in the wild and he is showing a complete U bar and Sambava coloration while the others don't have true U bars and have less Sambava like coloration. Your animal seems to have the Sambava coloration and the complete U bar which is why he screams Sambava to me. To be honest, I've always found some of the East coast locales to be more difficult to differentiate then the West coast locales.

I appreciate your input Chris. It's definitely a tough call. I'm not going to disagree with you on it though, as I have some doubt myself.

Here is another Maroantsetra that I purchased from Connie. Also a CBB.

What are your thoughts on this guy?

See, he looks more like what I think of as a Maroantsetra. He has more Tamatave-like coloration then Sambava coloration.

The first picture, he's about 10-11 months old. The second picture, he's only about 6 months old.

As always I agree with Calumma Andersonii...the first one is sambava the second closer to maroantsetra but I would still say tamatave coloration. Here are some pics to compare:

I definitely don't think your second animal is a Sambava. He's either a Maroantsetra or Tamatave. Like I said, I think these are the hardest two locales to differentiate but I would say he's one of the two.

Thanks...yea I feel it is safe to call the first one a sambava...the second one is a bit more difficult. As Chris said it is much more difficult to determine the difference between Maroantsetra and Tamatave, so to be honest I don't know. But, normally Maros have a more of orange and yellow with greens whereas Tamataves are have more red tones. You have some very good looking ones yourself...I especially like your sambava...nice yellows and oranges...

Here is my Tamatave male to add to the mix:

He is normally red, but one day when he woke up, he showed some orange...He wont do it again.

I like the red more anyway.
