Silkworms too big

I ordered about 50 silkworms from Coastal Silkworms, got them today, and only about 10 of them are small enough to feed to my 3.5 mo. old ambanja. Any thoughts on how I can salvage these worms so they don't go to waste?

Much appreciated.

You can seperate the big ones into another container and try to get them to caccoon and Pupate... Then once you have moths they should mate and lay eggs, then you can have all the small silkies you need. Of course it is not as easy as I just made it sound.

Just saw you were from chicago... I have to add one more thing... Go Packers!!!:D:cool:

You're a long way away from Cheesehead land!

Do you have any tips on what the silkies need in order to breed and reproduce well?

Here is a great thread on Breeding Silkies...

Silkworms 101

Welcome to the Forum.

My Dads side of the Family is from UP Michigan. I would have been homeless at age 10 had I not been a cheesehead.:)

GO Steelers! Still got faith in em ;-)

Yea man, I agree with SoCali, you should get them to cuccoon and breed em. If you need any help, let me know, I'd be glad to answer anything I can answer :)

Hey Dave your GF sounds like a Keeper!!!

Funny thing is, and it is rather Taboo... I really like the Bears as well:eek:, I can never really rute for them cause of the division, but I respect them as a team... I am all about the old Black and Blue "real" football teams. The teams that are still tough enough to play in the weather...That is how football is meant to be played.

Also Uribe...I am sure Dave could sell you some appropriatey sized silkies.;) I am a happy Georgia Bugs customer.

Since silkies are a soft bodied squishy worm-you can feed much bigger ones to your guy than you maybe think. Are they just WAY huge, or just kinda huge?

Yea we could go on and on with this convo, but I don't want to hijack his thread ;-) But the Bears is a good team.

And thank you for the compliment/referral Joe :)

Id say only about 5 of them are much bigger than an inch. My guy is still kinda small. What rule of thumb would you use?

Also, should I dust them?

Some people, like me occasionally with my younger chams, dust their silkworms occasionally with calcium for a little extra calcium boost. It's good to dust all feeders about once or twice a week with Reptivite or another vitamin supplement as I haven't heard of a single feeder than covers all the nutritional bases ;-)

But silkworms are naturally high in calcium, so it's not totally necessary to dust them, but being as your cham is only 3.5 months old, I'd dust them occasionally with calcium and twice a week with vitamins.
