Silk Moth Tragedy?

Today we had an awful experience with silk moths. A while ago, I had gotten some silkworms to feed Emoji. It was experimental, but it turned out that he loved them! There were four silkworms that were really too big to feed him, so I kept them around awhile. Since he loved the silks so much, I though, what the heck, and let them go into cocoons. I did some research and intended to attempt to breed them when they emerged. The other day, I went into "The Bug Room" :)eek:) and discovered two moths had hatched out. They were both female, so I put them in a new container and figured they would need to wait until a male hatched out. So I waited for the other two to emerge, and we heard noises coming from them. One got these red stains on one end. Just today, we got worried and decided to open up the cocoons. We opened them up to find a disaster inside. It was a bloody mess inside with eggs and dying moths. I figured that for some reason they were unable to get out and laid eggs anyway. :(:(:(:(:(:(:(
Has anyone ever had this happen to them? Why would two hatch out, but not the other two? Could I have prevented this? Turns out that all four were female, so I would not have been able to breed them anyway, but I would like to try again with better results.

I encountered similar when I bred silk worms. I had two silkworms that spun cocoons joined to each other. They didn't emerge, but when I cut them open there were two moths inside and they had been unable to get out and died inside, but one had laid eggs inside the cocoon before she died. I have also had loads that never fully pupated - they had spun but died before pupating inside.
