sick cat

soo my cat has been soo confusing lately, i have no idea what he wanting, or going through. he has been an inside cat for 9 years and havent had any problems, but all of a sudden he started peeing all over my moms stuff, he'd be locked in my room all day when i go to school and never one accident, but he'd go up to her room, meow at her, and pee either on the futon, or her pile of dirty clothes, right in front of her. he is fixed too..

his litter box is always clean and hes not showing any other signs of a kidney/urinary problem. so my mom got sick of it and started letting him run outside whenever he wanted, at first he was scared to death, now, he begs to go, but usually only at night, which scares me because its cold here! in the past few weeks of him doing that, he has lost a lot of weight..used to be nice and filled out, now, i can count his vertebre, but his hips and ribs arent protruding. he eats, sometimes like a pig too!

and finally, he has started these coughing fits, kind of like he has a hairball, but wet sounding, and usually starts if he purrs or just randomly. sounds like flem, but nothing has accompanied it, like a runny nose or eyes..just a horrendous cough, and its not just one cough, a whole fit and actually looks like he is suffocating, and sometimes his eyes roll to the back of his head. im worried, but we cant contact the vet til monday :/

any help until then would be appreciated :/

alrite well i have about 9 outdoor cats atm, this doesnt sound good. like a bad cold or something. i've got a few that get sick everyyear with a cold. make shure you go ahead and worm him. he may have ate something and gotten worms. i cant get you any kind of good anwser just guesses off of what my cats have gotten. be weary of him eating something posion. i've lost a few cats to kidny failure becuz people like to posion cats.

The age of the cat and the sudden peeing - it could be diabetes. Have the vet check for that. My cat got diabetes when he was about the same age. Lived to 16 with daily insulin injections.

Time to end their suffering...

The urinary problem needs to be addressed by a vet as it could be indicating an underlying health problem like kidney disease (incredibly common in cats). Combined with increased activity, hunger and weight loss sounds like hyperthyroidism or anothet endocrine disease. And the coughing fit sounds asthma or something blocking the respiratory tract, both of which need veterinary attention. If you're cat can't breathe take it to emergency vet because not being able to breathe is incompatible with life.

He needs to see a vet next week for sure.

well, i called the vet to make the appointment and explained his symptoms and was put on hold for 10 minutes while the phone person was talking to the vet...they suddenly came back and suggested me to the closest animal hospital. obviously its pretty serious. he has an appointment on monday at 9 in the morning and as long as i can keep him drinking and eating a little, he will make it to the appointment, but even then, i might just be told its too serious and to put him down. im hoping my hardest that its just a really bad cold or flu. i have him all snuggled in on my futon with his favorite stuffed animal, some fresh catnip leaves, food, water, and his litterbox, but he hasnt really been moving...so i dont know. it leaves me heartbroken knowing ive had him for 9 years and he has always been there for me. ive always expected him to live to an old age and be able to take him to college/ect with me :(

These were my thoughts exactly! Hyperthyroidism and kidney disease pretty high on the list...good luck! :)

Any news on your kitty?

well, he cant keep anything down, at all. not food and he usually spits up water within minutes of drinking it..and he keeps having dry heaves and just puking up saliva :/ he has been sleeping most of the day, he just needs to get through tomorrow and he has an appointment at 9 a.m. on monday...

He sounds like he's doing very poorly. I dont think it's wise to wait until Monday if there is any other option. Cats can't tolerate not eating for more than a day or two without risking liver damage that needs hospitalization and serious veterinary care. I'm really worried about him...

I know you must be worried about your cat. Please know I am thinking of you and hoping things can be worked out to help you cat on Monday. Hang in there and know others care.

Most vets will take emergency cases...IMHO its not fair to the cat to wait.

our vet does not take emergencies, but there is an animals hospital around here that does, thing is, they will charge $500 just to see your animal, an extra $100 to tell you its dying, or another $500 to do tests and again, the $100 to tell you its dying. -.- i have a friend that is still in debt from them 2 years after she took her dog there and they did all these different tests, yadda yadda, and then in the end his hip displacia was too far along for them to save him....her two vet visits costed around $3000 for them to put her dog down anyways...thats money i dont have to spare, my job is giving me crap hours to begin with... :/

really? that seems pretty high.....

i did about 20 vet trips in total to the emergency hospital after my kitten somehow managed to cut her achilles tendon. that included the initial emergency visit, shave/stitches,blood work, evaluation/stay period after surgery, and a weekly bandage change each week her cast was on. I paid about the same $3000 but that was mostly for the costs of surgery

theres only one animal hospital and one vet clinic, so they both take advantage of people in their greatest need :/ but..on the good side, i gave my cat one scoop of wet catfood before i left for work, he ate about half of it and when i got home i cant find any puke anywhere...so hopefully he kept it down, or hid it lol.
