hey guys, just thought i'd share this tip as I've recently discovered it takes a lot of the cage maintenance work out of my life.


why clean a cage four times when you can suck up debris daily and won't need to dismantle your cage and heavy duty sanitize it for a long time.

this idea operates on the principal that the cleaner your cage floor is to begin with, the cleaner it remains

but when debris such as fallen plant leaves, poo, and dirt are left for more than a few hours on the ground, moisture comes to them, and your whole cage floor gets filthy! you then have to take your whole cage down and scrub it, and at the rate this happens thats probably a lot!


a small 5 gallon wet dry shop vac costs rougly 30 dollars at wal mart and has enough power to do the job at hand.

I now keep one in my caging room, and whenever there is debris on the floor in the cage, it takes two seconds to suck it up, rinse with water, and your cage will stay very clean for a month! instead of a week!

hope this helps take some of the unnescary maintenance out of your life so you can concentrate on more important things in your chameleons life!

Brad, what's your chameleon doing on the floor of the cage??? hehe. just kidding.

Shopvacs work well - but don't forget to dump them. You might not be aware of the disgusting mess inside, but it's there.

i've been using one as my main cage cleaner for a year or so. Turds, dead insects, plants, dirt, water - it all goes away. Plus, it's good to have one around if you spill a lot of water. got to clean it up before the wife finds out...

even if you did suck up your chameleon don't freak out lol he'd just be inside the shop vac lol hopefully not full of water

If I made that much noise in my chams cage on a regular basis they would pack up and move out.

ps the noise comes from the base of the unit, with an 8 foot hose, do you hesitate to vacuum by your chams cage, didn't thinks so, perhaps he would pack up and move out, brilliant

maybe i can use a shop vac full of water on reverse and hydrate my Jackson's. the noise problably will block out my 5 children from bothering my chams as well. my basement is tropical but my male still was dehydrate when i saw the vet today

ps where do you buy those suitcases for chams. I might be able to take them to work if they could bring their own supplies(LOL)

Good idea, I'm just thinking that if you use it for a while, You'd really have to keep the vac clean as well. I tried that and the accumulation of debris (mainly poo and dead insects) just start to really smell plus ants going in there to eat the dead insects. I cleaned it all out, but the inner parts of the hose get dried gunk and eventually just smell... If only chameleons had... chameleon litter instead of kitty litter.... haha just scoop the top layer out. j/k.

well with all due respect to everyones posts, a shop vac is about the easiest thing to clean, regular cleaning requires a trash can dump and monthly cleaning calls for a 1 minute hose blast on completely waterproof plastic parts, obviously don't use a nice hepa filter for picking up crap, and the crappy filters clean out in your 1 minute hose down
