Shipping Jackson's from Hawaii - anyone done it successfully?

I had wanted to ship some Jackson's from Hawaii to Idaho, but am running into roadblock after roadblock. Has anyone done this before?

I understand I have to get a permit from dept of land and natural resources and that that will allow me to ship up to 4 animals, which is all fine and good. BUT, I am told I cannot "send them", but that I can take them on an airline...however, none of the airlines are making this possible (of those I've tried (Delta, NW and Continental). I see all kinds of commercial breeders shipping chameleons...how do they ship them?

Anyway, if you have successfully gotten chameleons from Hawaii to the mainland, please help.

Thanks,
Rob

You can always smuggle it? :D

Although I love adventure just as much as the next guy... The idea of having them stop the plane on the runway, and being escorted off by the police just isn't my cup of tea...:D

They are that anal about stuff like that..... For me personally, I am going to have to say... "No go!" on that one...:D

As public as these forums are, I highly suggest you don't suggest that. Even if it is a joke - you never know what kind of trouble that can get you into!

I am not going to get arrested for suggesting illegal activities. I do not even own jacksons. I have never been to Hawaii either..:(

True, but per chance you own a jacksons in the future, try to get some exported, etc.. and they do an investigation or something etc. you could get into trouble.
Game and fish does browse bigger forums often to see if people are going out to look for geckos etc. without their permits. Happened during the SD show.

I know I can try that, but won't...and I know the original post was a joke. That is why I am trying to find a solution that is legal. I hope others keep posting suggestions. I will contact the one source listed and see what I find out.

my fiance and I were in Maui and wanted to bring some back, its real easy to get the permit, but our airline wouldn't allow them, we flew American Airlines.

I would be interested in knowing why the airlines dont allow this. I thought as long as a package/carry on can fit under the seat in front of you it would be okay. I thought people were able to bring small dogs and cats on board this way instead of the cargo hold.

Simple. Liability. If U.S.F.W. officers don't know the difference between R. kerstenii and R. brevicaudatus, what makes you think AA employees will know the difference between say, a cornsnake and a venomous snake? Unregulated trade has caused many problems worldwide-- including, but not limited to, introduction of pests, pathogens, invasive species, etc.

If there are reputable jacksonii vendors in the mainland, why go through all the trouble? Don't get me wrong, seeing xantholophus in the wild must be an exhilarating experience-- looking for them, finding them, photographing them. But where's the motivation to bringing them back? Just curious.

Put them in a bag and strap them to your thighs and act normal :p

A while back some guy was busted for doing this. He had like venomous snakes and everything in his pants.

Why can't you Fed Ex / UPS Red them to your home address? This is assuming you obtained them legally.

because it is illegal to ship them off of the islands, they must travel with the permit holder ,/ the hdnr's reasoning on this,(is both logical & flawed) , hdnr's stand is that allowing them to be shipped off of the islands, encourages trade (for profit) in the species , which which also encourages people to raise them, breed them, and release them on the other islands (where they now have a foothold anyway) in an effort to increase their numbers, and that may be in part true, but the hdnr views them as a pest and wants to discourage trade, however my personal view is this , if the hdnr truly views them as a pest and truly wants to get rid of them , encouraging trade is exactly what they need to do, hdnr's efforts to erradicate them have obviously failed, as they are now well established on most of the islands , however history has proven time and time again, that the best way to erradicate any species from any given area is to make it profitable to do so. i firmly believe that making it legal and profitable to trade in them without limits, would erradicate them from the islands in a matter of years, regardless of peoples attempts to perpetuate the wild populations. to further add to the irony and bureaucracy, veileds have now gained a foot hold in the islands and the hdnr is insisting on the exact same failed path that they have taken with jacksons, if they were to charge a fee for harvesting like a fishing or hunting license, they could partially offset their budgetary concerns and erradicate them at the same time, but their stance is that errodes the current laws in regards to discouraging the establishment of non-native species. there are other issues as well, like worries about people trespassing on agricultural lands, and errosion from too much traffic on already under pressure, sensitive public lands. / for sure its a complicated issue , but i have to believe, like most government things, they are making it more complicated than it needs to be. one final note the hdnr does not give advice on shipping carriers, because they do not want to be held responsible by those that ship, or accused of playing favorites by the airlines that refuse to transport the animals, the conundrum is that they refuse to acknowledge is, that without a consenting airline, or means of conveniently locating one , the permit is useless / futher even though hdnrs own studies, have so far proved them to be fairly harmless to the native species and habitat / although i have never been there, i personaly feel (and i am sure many both residents and non residents would agree) that the islands would be a lessor place without them, so far, they have proven to take nothing ,and add only beauty, however i am sure like all things, there are always some, who dont agree. go figure

So i would never do this, but why not just put it in a box and put it in your backpack?! with the box closed it will fall asleep, and if it is not moving, the xray operator will prolly think its a toy, just a thought.

the answer is simple , i suppose a guy could just play dumb (and it really wouldnt playing) but even with a permit , failure to declare, could open you up to federal charges of illegal interstate transport of reptiles which is a felony, and even first time charges could concievably result in fines excess of 10s of thousands of dollars

well that is true, i was just saying the person might think nothing of it when nothing is moving, or do they look for things like that? Because i can only imagine what kind of picture they see, and with it sleeping and its tail curled up i dont think they would think anything of it.
