They need to shed their skin as they grow....like a snake. As they grow they get too big for their skin so shed it so it doesn't constrict their bodies. Sort of like a crab will choose a bigger shell as it grows LOL Chameleons crawl out of their own skin in favour of the brand new lovely skin underneath LOL I suppose in the wild it would get rid of any surface parasites too.
