About a week ago I got a Senegal chameleon from a small store not like petsmart we drove a while to go and get it. The lady at the store told me that they are not completely done growing like they were half way done and in the cage there were 3 in there together and they said they didnt know the genders so i just got one. Today I noticed that my chameleon has been digging a hole and each time i saw it in the dirt i thought it might have fallen so i would put it back up with the leaves but it kept going back to the hole and so i looked up what that means and it keeps saying baby chameleons but isnt my chameleon too little to be pregnant if its only half way done growing also its colors are really really dark right now. ive been doing everything right like its eating and everything so i was hoping you might be able to give me some sort of answers. im not 100% sure on how this website works so im not sure if ill get my response on here. Oh also i looked up how to tell its gender and mines a girl.

okay i just took this and the stuff on it is dirt

My Senegal likes to dig in dirt for a while when I first got him. He was young (1.5-2 y/o) . And he’s Just like your pic, covering with dirt haha. But he stopped after maybe a couple of months, or when he fully reached adulthood I think. It might also related to the environment, I switch his cage later and there’s no soil in his cage anymore and he won’t go to the bottom of the cage anymore.

Sorr to ask...but can you take a photo of it from the side when it's up in the branches with something in the photo so I can see how big it is too please? Is it still digging?

I would recommend filling out the history form we have here (below). As already noted, digging can often mean that your chameleon is trying to lay eggs. It could also mean that something is wrong husbandry wise and your pet is trying to escape adverse conditions (high temperatures, prying eyes from you or other animals, etc) and just happens to be digging incidentally as s/he crawls around everywhere. It could also be that nothing is wrong and once your animal acclimates this won't be an issue anymore, but we'll have a better chance of helping you out if we have all the info.

Chameleon Info:
  • Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?
  • Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?
  • Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
  • Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?
  • Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
  • Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
  • History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.

Cage Info:
  • Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
  • Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
  • Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
  • Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
  • Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
  • Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
  • Location - Where are you geographically located?

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about.

  2. Photos can be very helpful.
