Hello all,
If you have been following my journey with Rango, then you may already be aware that he was suffering from a double eye infection and was seeing treatment for it. My vet— Dr. Merkwan— was an incredibly experienced and understanding individual, handling Rango’s case with care and compassion.
Rango had gained 20 kg (going from around 82 to about 102 I believe) within two weeks. I took this as a sign that he was set to improve in the future.
However, something happened to Rango yesterday: while I was sitting in my bedroom, I suddenly heard a sickening thunk. It took me a moment to process what happened, but I quickly rushed over to find that Rango had somehow broke through the cardboard keeping him from falling all the way to the floor and had, in fact, fallen from the top of his cage to the very bottom. Upon my unprofessional inspection, I found nothing to be wrong with him, but worry quickly began to eat me alive.
I came home from work today to discover a very pale, curled-up chameleon, still lying where I had set him this morning (after providing him a dosage of his medication). I immediately called around to find an emergency vet… but the nearest one was half an hour away.
Rango passed in the car ride there.
I watched him open his jaws to take one final breath before he fell limp in my hands. I knew that the vet I was headed to wouldn’t be able to save him anymore, but when I got there, they were able to cremate him… and I will be receiving his ashes in the mail within a week.
It’s with a heavy heart that I announce the end of my journey. Perhaps one day, in the future, I will return to the world of chameleons… but, for now, I absolutely have to resign for my own well-being.
Thank you all for your assistance and advice throughout Rango’s life. I truly believe that he wouldn’t have made it this far without the help I’ve received— both online and with my experienced vet.
