Hey I have a chameleon but I just recently purchased a baby savannah monitor.Anyone know any good substrates for them and do they need the same care such as UVA/UVB bulbs? My dad use to have one that grew huge.but He is using sand as a substrate not sure if its good cant they injest it????

HELP!!!

a 50/50 mix of decomposed granite and virgin topsoil mix is what ive always heard is best and what ive used for my monitors (i have a water and a savannah). Monitors arent quite as fragil as chameleons.

where did you do your research for your husbandry?

i have my first monitor baby as well....do not use substrate use paper towels....they make a mess at this age and its better for them to feed in their cage when under 12 in. at this size you can offer silks and crix from ur fingers building trust and a relationship. put him in the bath tub with almost too hot water for an hour a week to swim they love the water. make sure that they can touch the bottom of tub at the shallow end. make sure your water bowl has a heat light above it your monitor will spend alot of time in his water and the heat willmake the water evaporate faster and will keep you on your toes about cleaning it every day. i do not feed mine in a seaperate area at this time because instead of stressing him out at a young age im building trust. if ur sav flatens its body when you pet it STOP it feels threatened. do not try to hold it in any kind of grip they dont like it . gently grasp him in your hand and allow him to relax on your thumb till he jumps and then its time to put him away. it took we awhile to find great info on them ill look again cause i cant remember..also look for zeus on youtube...he is a sav and he eats with the family dog

my dad knows most of the husbantry for savannahs because he had one for about 5+ years....

thats cool i love my little sav i didnt mean to come off pissy, i just see so many people jump into monitors (esp. savs because they are so small as babies) and get in waaaay over the head. Same goes with large breed constrictors.

post pics of your little guy :)

i would probably stick to a topsoil mixture, you should always avoid using fine sand as a substrate, if i did use sand with my sand boas, i would use sandblasting sand because its coarser than fine sand so it wont cause eye and nasal infections
