Safe hibiscus species?

So people talk a lot about hibiscus having edible leaves and flowers. I wanted to pick one up so I could add those into my gutload in the future. I've read some species, particularly the rose of sharon type, are toxic. I think all the temperates have some sort of toxicity? I'm wondering if the ones that are local to me may be the toxic species considering I live in PA. Most labels just say hibiscus so if anyone could let me know what to look for I'd greatly appreciate it!

I got one a while back from the local hardware store, and my veiled went nuts eating it! Like to the point where there were no leaves left! He ate the flowers, too. Stick with the tropical variety, like you see in HI, and you should be fine.
