Hi all, first post here. I have a male baby Rudis Sternfeldi named Pistachio.

Your Chameleon - Male Rudis Sternfeldi. Approx. 7 months old, have had him for 3 months

Handling - Only one time when I switched his cage this week. He is very timid and really doesn't care to be bothered. He gets frightened easily.

Feeding - I started with pin head crickets and fruit flies, and he loves the flies. Slowly stopped eating crickets. I got 2 colonies of bean beetles and he has been loving them. I feed him about 10 every morning.

Supplements - Rep-Cal calcium with VIT.D3. I was advised to only dust the beetles once a month with the D3 because he is so small. Would love some guidance on supplements

Watering - I manually spray his cage 3-5 times a day. He hates being sprayed so I try to wait until he is away from his basking spot. I plan to get an automatic mister soon. I have seen him drink regularly until the last couple of days.

Fecal Description - brown with white urates. He has never been tested in my care

History - He has always been timid and not fond of feedings or being watered. I try to keep his stress to a minimum. I had him in a glass enclosure until I recently changed him to an all mesh cage.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Recently switched to all screen cage from a glass terrarium. Medium reptibreeze aluminum cage (16"L x 16"W x 30"H)

Lighting - zoomed 60w daylight blue bulb. UVB long bulb, don't have the packaging anymore. Was recommended by exotic pet store. He is 12 hours on 12 hours off on an automatic timer.

Temperature - 90 degrees basking, 60-65 at the bottom. His cage gets below 70 overnight. I have a thermometer in the cage.

Humidity - 50-60% standing, 70-90% after spraying. I use a humidity spectrum I got from Petco. Harder to maintain now with a screen cage.

Plants - Fake plants. I would like to get a ficus, though. Driftwood that was baked and sterilized. Antlers. Fake vine. (He loves this most)

Placement - his cage is in the corner of the room in our apartment. Near the kitchen. Not near an air vent. He is about 3 feet off the ground.

Location - Catarina, TX

Help! Concerned Cham Mom:

I am concerned because of his recent behavior. He sleeping during the day, not moving around like usual. I had him in a glass enclosure until a couple days ago. I switched him into a full mesh cage. I had just finished shedding and I noticed his eyes were bugging him. He would run them on the driftwood in his cage and on the vines. When I switched his cage I gave him a Cham shower after researching it on here. It didn't seem to help, he was super stressed :/ since being in his new enclosure he is lethargic, not eating like normal and very grouchy. His right eye is closed most of the day and he is still rubbing on things. I tried to get a good picture but I'm afraid to bug him too much! Just now when I was trying to get a picture he opened his mouth (probably to hiss) and there was a small wheezing sound. :( He is normally cruising around and dropping from his vines and I'm worried there is something wrong.

Your supplement schedule is off. He needs calcium WITHOUT d3 at every feeding and calcium WITH d3 dusting twice a month. I'm pretty sure he is not getting the proper nutrients to maintain good health. What are you feeding/gutloading your crickets with? Also, you should be able to check your UVB itself to see what type of bulb you have. The wheezing sound may be a sign of respiratory illness, so a vet visit maybe in store. Hopefully more will chime in to help you soon.

Thank you for responding. Really makes me mad that "experts" don't give good advice. I should have come here first. I will start him on the supplement right away. Any tricks to get him eating again? He hasn't had much of an appetite :(

I haven't been gut loading crickets because I haven't been buying them. He stopped eating them and is only eating bean beetles now.

I meant to say calcium every other feeding. Did you check to see what type of UVB you have? 5.0? 10.0? It's possible the lighting could be hurting his eyes as well.

His left eye in the picture looks bad like it is filmed over where you would normally see the pupil. I would get him to a vet right away. Looks like maybe some sort of infection. He cannot eat if he cannot see!

He is worse this morning. I can't take him in until tomorrow, everything is closed. Is there anything I can do for him today? I feel terrible :(

Try a warm water pouring from a cup over his head/eyes, sometimes that will help open them up. If you spray even hot water on him it will be cold when it hits him.

Another advantage is that he probably is not drinking, and this may encourage that.

This is solvable, the vet tomorrow!

CHEERS!

Also take an eye dropper and try dripping some water on his nose for several minutes to try and get him to drink. You can also try taking a feeder and rubbing it on his lips. He may open his mouth and eat. I would definitely try getting some water in him. Let us know how the vet visit goes.

On top of the hydration you can also carefully place a small dose of Terramycin in the eye..

Yes, but that would be if he has some! If there is an infection present the vet will probably prescribe some antibiotic eye ointment, Terramycin being one of them.

Thank you everyone for your help! I have him some water with a dropped this morning, he didn't seem to mind me helping him. I have a vet appointment today, I hope he doesn't get too stressed on the 2 hour drive :( I'll post how it goes! Thank you again :)
