Room temp for enclosure

Hey guys just a quick question for you. I have a 5 month old male panther. I was just wondering around what temperature do you keep the room you have your chameleon living in? I live in New York where its currently pretty cold and I try to keep the house temp 68-70 degrees. Now obviously he has heat lamps and the upper portion of his enclosure ranges from 85-90 but he seems to want to only bask in the heat lamps and when he's not in the lamps he remains a dark coloration. Just wondering if any of you thought that is too cold for him and around what temps you guys keep the area that you have your enclosures in. Thanks

90 is to warm for a 5 month old. 80-85 is closer to what you should be targeting. 68-70 is perfectly fine for typical ambient temps. Adjust your basking temp, and you are doing great.

ok good. I originally had it 85 but as I said he seems to not be able to bask enough and I've even found him trying to get closer to the heat a few times so I didn't know if it was too cold for the little guy. Thanks for the help

Once they're to a year or so old they can handle the 90ish temp. I'm only taking what I've learned from everyone around here. To me though the temp gradient differences makes sense to me. I'm only assuming this idea but if you think about it what they would be doing in nature. The adult males get the best basking spots higher in the tree/bushes and the warmer spots. Females might tend to get the next best spots, and the youngins take what they can. Males higher, females mid levels, and juvi's even lower.

yea I've read the same thing on here and elsewhere about juvis 80-85 range. Though the breeder recommender temps a bit higher, so Im not sure if thats what the chameleon was used to prior to coming to me. If anyone else could offer some feedback about what temps the room is they keep their chameleons in it would be greatly appreciated

The juvi panthers can handle basking temp of 90. If you see them gaping(mouth open), then it is too hot. If not, it should be ok. If your chameleon was trying to get closer to the light, then the maybe the temp you are providing is a little too cool.

I agree that 85F is better basking temp until he's closer to a year old.

68-70 is good for lower to mid-cage.
