i was woundering could someone post a pick or two with the diferince between male and female dubia roches? i just got some yesterday and am trying to sex them from what i understand males dont have wings and females do i think i have all males, im just trying to make sure.

Males wings extend from behind their head all the way past there butts :)
Females have what look like tiny wings.
 
ok all mine look like females, i orderd large ones from lllreptile i only orderd 10 i just am tryin to get my feet wet with them. to be honest with you they freek me out, but its all for the love of my chams right. with the males are the wings there when they are young or do they develop when the are adults?

Dont worry becuase I did the same thing as you.
Guess where the roaches come from.

They are to young to sex, so give them a month or two and you will see some wings.
Same thing happened to me.
 
thanks , i got them out of the box yesterday and was like ok they all look the same how am i going to start a colony with one sex? ok then i will wait and see what happens im planing on getting a 100 mix pack in about a week i just wasint sure if i wanted to get into it but i think it will work out ok.
 
The Nymphs will grow to a rather large size before they finally show their sex. When they do it's blatantly obvious. :)

How many chams will you be feeding?

If you get 100 you'll have a little wait before you can start feeding themm off. If your chams are big enough you can start feeding off males to try to keep a 4 female to 1 male ratio.

im feeding 6 chams and one very hungry juvi beardi. i also raise my own crix and silkys so i am in no hurry to get them going im just takin my sweet time.

How many did you order? If your whole shipment is nymph's then you need to not feed out the roaches for several months. It takes up to 2 or 3 months for nymphs to reach adulthood and start breeding.

150 is about the right size for a colony if you're feeding 1 chameleon. For as many herps as you have, you're going to just need to let those roaches sit and breed for months and months if you want them to be worth your money.

Do a search on dubia's in the forums here and you'll find a lot of info.

I have a colony of 300+ dubia's and I haven't bought crickets since last summer. It really is the way to go. It took me a few deep breaths before I could get used to them too, but once you're in it, you realize they're just another animal on the earth and you should be able to get over it pretty quickly.

In fact - you may even get a little attached to them. They're kinda fascinating! ;)
 
For those that are interested I am still selling 50 large nymphs-adults for $22 plus shipping. I still have around 300 that I can sell off. I usually add 10% to ensure all get there alive.

I actually started my stock from blaberus. My only complaint was that in his mixed colonies for $30, over 3/4 were small to medium sized nymphs. This wasn't so bad, but if you are trying to start a colony, it takes a lot longer.

There are a few people on this forum that occassionally sell when their personal colonies get too abundant. I have also bought from Heika and Brad (Moderator- and was completely satisfiied.) I personally use the money to help pay for roach food (fresh fruits and veggies.) It is usually cheaper to go through one of us. Also if we don't follow through, we have to live down criticism on this forum...

And I'll say I started my colony with Dr. Wheelock's stock! They arrived in great shape, healthy and happy.

I would suggest maybe getting a second order from him or Brad or anyone else around here to suppliment your colony and getted started. There's nothing worse then starting with too few and then realizing too late that your feeding them off faster then they can reproduce.
 
To grow 100 mixed into a big enough colony to feed 6 chams and a bearded I would think it could take almost 8-10 monthes. I'd try to get as many adults as you can, in a 4 female to 1 male ratio. You'll most likely still have to wait a little before feeding them off alot.

I'll definitely agree with this statement. When I bought my first colony, I'd only touch them with tweezers. Now, they don't bother me one bit. I sit and watch them once in a while because they are fascinating creatures.
 
like i said I'm in no hurry i have a solid colony of crix and tons of silky egg's so the roaches are something i was recommended by my vet so i just bought a few at first to see if i could deal with them. now that i have them i think they are kind of cool and I'm looking forward to starting a colony and if it takes 8 months then it takes 8 months what's a good learning experience without investing some time right.. i also want to thank everyone for your help this is why i love this forum.
 
I just got some roaches from Pedro92 on here. At first I opened the box and was kinda grossed out. lol After watching them for a minute I realized they are pretty cool creatures. I may put them in an aquarium so I can see them instead of a rubbermaid tub. I would definataly recommend getting some from him. They were packed well and all arived alive.
