I rescued a jackson yesterday from a pet store. He is active and is moving around and his grip is ok and his poo is normal. I have set up the cage to match my other chameleon, a senegal, exactly so everything is the same. (temp is 80 humidity 60-70%) He ate this morning, i saw him drink yesterday.
So i guess my only question is that he is walking around the cage today and then he would stop and open his mouth up real wide, so i assumed it was just too hot and switched off the regular lamp bulb and left the UVB tube light on which is keeping it at 75 now. When he was opening his mouth i was droping a couple of drops of water into his mouth slowly. Which he was completely aware of cause he gave me the stink eye and closed his mouth and swallowed. Is the mouth opening thing only due to heat and dehydration or is there any other causes? Going to vet tommrow with him and my other cham.

IMO the open mouth is going to be from being overheated as a good basking temp for them is about 79. With the cage generally being between 72-74. It may be from other things to but this is what I see first. The vet may tell you more so keep us updated :)

Definately will keep ya updated on him. Mostly going to get these burns on his back checked out. They are healing up and dried out but i want to get them double checked and i want to get him checked for parasites. Other then that i actually think he's doing better now that i reduced the watts on his heat bulb. and its bed time anyway so he went to hide and go to sleep around 6:30 like my other cham. Find the spot, Stop in the stop, Close eyes in the spot, Don't leave that spot till morning...lol

Have you noticed any sticky saliva on the sides of his mouth when he opens it? I find a lot of jacksons come in with URI..Also don't forget to bring a poo sample with you when you go to the vets.

got a poo sample from this morning i put in a baggie in the fridge...which my mom doesn't like. but i'm gonna see if i can get a fresh sample tommrow morning...oooo fun.
And no there is no sticky saliva when he opens his mouth. He actually seems really healthy as though a breeder had rasied him up, its just the pet store that ruined him. They don't realize the circumstances that they put these chams in. They are like tourture chambers not vivs.
