right now im using an Exo Terra 60 Watt Sun Glo Daylight bulb for my veiled chameleon and her hottest basking point is 95-100F and when i mist her it drops to 85-90F. i want to drop her temps down to low 80s since i dont want her to produce eggs. im thinking of getting her a 40 watt bulb but do you guys have a good recommendation of brands or such that you use to get temps in the low 80's? i have the heat lamp resting on the top of her cage and she has about 6 inches of space between the bulb and the place where she sits to bask.

The fancy-smancy reptile bulbs burn out quick and are way overpriced. Go to any hardware store and pick up soft-white, incandescent house bulbs. You can get a pack of four for 89 cents.

95-100f seems pretty hot for basking spot. I use 38 watt house bulbs to get a temp of 85-88f. I had used a 100 watt then a 60 but still to hot so went smaller

So is that the only lighting that you use in your encloser?
Or do you use an alternative solution?

i have a uvb coil which im replacing with a reptisun 5.0 and the 40 watt housebulb, thats all im using currently at the moment.

a 50w 'spot' lamp will work well for her.

Bringing down her temps won't really stop her from laying eggs. You need to focus more on her diet to reign in egg production.

WARNING!

You should use the flood lights if you don't have a ceramic ballast. Normal bulbs will heat the plastic ballasts too much, releasing fumes and becoming a potential fire hazard.

I just learned this yesterday when I took my ballasts in to see if they sell replacements. I grabbed some AgriGrow and full spectrum spot/flood lights and I like the lighting better using them. I think they emit lower heat though so you might want to experiment a little with wattages.

i dont feed her a whole lot, only about 6 0.5" crickets a day and a few waxworms or a mealworm/superworm. shes kinda tiny for a 6 month old veil (about 5 inches excluding her tail) so i do want to add more food to her meals but i dont want to overfeed her cuz i dont want her to lay eggs :p

i do have a ceramic ballast (i had to look up what that was lol) i might try flood lights out but the 40 watt im using now is giving pretty good temperature, between 85-90.

I have to use a 25 watt bulb to get it as low as 80-82.

i had to mess around with how close the basking branch was to the bulb. its about 8 inches away with a 40 watt and im getting 85-90.

I was getting the same temp, except it was about 4 inches away. I practically baked the poor guy for an hour or so, but I changed it really quick. Now all is good in the jungle. :)
