Hey guys Ares our WC Nosy Faly is having a realy hard/bad shed. I have been misting him alot and giving him showers. I am also useing ZooMeds Repti shedding aid. It seems to be doing no good. Today I was looking him over and he has some bloody sores on him:(and his old/dry skin still will not lift off and seems to be making the sores.
Any helpful info would be very appreciated.

First, I would stop using the shedding aid. There could be an ingredient that is adding to the problem. The sores will need treatment (something like OTC Polysporin) so they don't get infected and can heal. Scabs are much harder to shed cleanly so it sort of complicates a normal attempt to shed that skin. What's your cage humidity dropping down to between spraying?

40% And then when the mistking goes off it spikes all the way up and then drys out. The mistking goes off 4 times a day and I still hand mist 3 times a day.

He might have some other skin issue that you are not seeing. I would recommend trying a little reptaid and see what happens. It has worked wonders for most of my chameleons' issues.

maybe try taking a towel. getting it drenched then wringing it out then drape it over the side of the cage. the old dry skin is causing sores? is it from him trying to scrape it off or are you trying to peel it off? if there are sores forming just from old skin. i personally think something else is going on.

i see your name on here frequently so i assume your supplements/gutload is good.

also what kind of water do you use when misting?

I use RO water. And the sores look like were two peices of dryed skin are shrinking and the skin under is getting pulled with it making sores. I have not tryed to pull it off and he has not been doing a lote of rubbing.

And supplements/gutload is spot on. They eat better then I do.:)

you have way more chameleon experience than me so take this for what it's worth.

I would wonder if it isn't as pssh said some underlying issue with this guy (skin/shed).

I gave out some crested geckos to my neices and nephews for christmas and one died due to stuck shed (he was small and it cut off his air for to long I believe), while reading about it, it seems there are some that just have a hard time shedding. I know this gecko had shed issues befor (at that time I had all the babies in one tank) while the others did not.

now I've never heard of shedding being as big of a issue with chameleons (it is pretty much one of the main ones with cresties) and doubt it would lead directly to death in a adult, but since there are sores if it was me I might look into a vet (could it be fungal?)

Maybe do a skin culture just in case? I had a chameleon with a bad skin fungus infection and shedding was awful looking.

Ya I have been doing a retaid treatment for a few days now. I will try to post some pictures tomarrow. If nothing changes in a tomarrow I guess its off to the vet.

Really dude, if your guy has an infection it's a bitch to control that. You have to find a good retile vet for sure. Good luck.

I read somewhere in the forums that if you soak your chameleon in luke warm water (making sure that it doesn't drown) will sometimes do the trick and also if they're having a hard time producing a bowel movement. I'm kind of skeptical about the shedding issue though. I also read in here that vegetable oil mixed with something else helps. You should search for shed or shedding and oil. I'm also skeptical about this idea as well, but if you're at a last resort, it couldn't hurt.

His head has started to shed off his body is still haveing a hard time. But I think it is because he is the old faly of the two boys. He hasent got any more sores but still hasent sheded his body all the way. I tryed to help him a little and he was not having it(still wild I guess)I have been giving him shower and he is still eating and acting fine so I am not sure on how long it will take.If nothing happens today then I am going to put him in the shower and hopfully help him get it off with out getting bite.

I gut load once a week with things that have a good amount of vita. A in it . I also use reptivite on one or two feeders everyonce and a while I herd it has vita. A in it too.
I have not tryed the gel tab vita. A. but it might be worth a try.
All my other chames shed just fine.

Did this particular cham have old shed left over from his last shed? Sometimes that can cause issues with skin/fungal infections. You really need to determine if its fungal or viral. If its viral theres not much you can do. If its fungal Ive heard athletes foot cream works.
