I would tell the guy that you will only pay for the vet if it can be proven that the animal was sick before you sold it and only if it wasn't caused by something he did. Since it's not a written agreement, all you can do in the future is be a little more specific about your vet agreement, such as requesting to see all the medical records, choosing the vet, etc. I would also tell the guy that you will not pay for anything if you don't get all information from the vet, because that's just ridiculous that he would think you would pay without knowing what you're paying for.
