Real oak tree branches

Are real oak tree branches ok to use in an enclosure ? What about ones with moss on them?

When I use an outside branch, I usually power spray/(no soap) it to get off the extra bark and other things. It then comes out smooth. Be carefule of sap dripping from the cut ends.

Ive heard that moss can cause impaction if ingested. If he is going to be hunting in his enclosure, I would definitely stay away from the moss just in case he snaps some up with his feeder. Even if you are hand/cup feeding be wary that some chams will eat just about anything in their enclosure to "test" it.

I would make sure the branches are mite and pesticide free. You can de-bark them and then wash them with a bleach/water (1:3) mix and then rinse them really well again.

As for the moss toss it away and go to a garden centre and buy a bag of spanish moss. Just drape it around the vines/branches. It will look bad when you first put it in but after a few mistings it will take moisture/nutrients from the air and it looks super cool after. Very jungle like.

Thanks for the info! I wasn't sure about the moss although I am sure there is moss in their natural environment and they must eat it at times.

I've never had issues with them. I wont use branches that have bark or moss that just crumbles right off though. I'm afraid that it might crumble off into their eyes if they rub on them. I usually just wash the branches with water and make sure there are no bugs or anything nasty on it.

All the branch's I use are real with the bark on. If the bark is peeling I pass on using them. Once I find branch's I like I put them in the oven on low to dry them out and to kill anything that might be living in them.

Vine's and branche's

Hi Im new to the forum. I have been reading a lot in the last few day's and plan to build a cage using mostly live stuff. Im wondering if being in the north can I just harvest some of the grape vine's and tree branch's behind my house once they freeze is that enough to kill everything off.

The bugs from your area are adapted to survive the freeze's.

Using the natural vines and branches are just fine. I look for branches that arent peeling like others have said. I just spray them down real good and make sure they dont have bugs on them, I dont do anything else. With vines and in my outdoor cages I do that same thing.
