Quick breeding question.

I just got an 11 month female ambilobe to breed with my Remy. I showed them to each other today and she was receptive so I put him in her cage and in no time he was doing his head bobbing and getting down to business.

My question is this - How long should I leave them together. I have had some people say to remove him once the deed is done, while others say to leave them together for a couple of days. Any insight from all of you experts would be greatly appreciated!

You can leave them together until she shows signs of being gravid. Probably sometime tomorrow if not tonight. Good luck

Thank you. I keep checking on them briefly, though I am trying to give them some privacy. They have been together for nearly 40 minutes so far, so all seems to be going well.

You weren't kidding about just getting her, she just got there today! Too late now, but for next time she really should have been quarantined first to prevent her from passing anything onto your male that you may not be aware of, and it's a little cruel that she didn't get at least a few days to settle in and recover from shipping (in my opinion.) That's just a lot of stress and change for one day, a lot more than I'd be comfortable with.

I'd get him out of there and let her settle down for the night in peace.

Yeah, I wasn't planning on putting them together so soon. I was holding him and he saw her so I thought I would see how she would react to him. I honestly didn't expect her to be receptive, but when I saw that she was, I got excited and decided to let them be (perhaps a poor choice on my part).

I have already removed him from the cage. I will leave her alone for a week or so at this point. She seems to have settled in pretty well in such a short time. She has been drinking well, ate 30 small dubia today, and seems quite content in her new cage.

I truly hope I didn't subject her to too much stress. Now I am worried. I really do want the best for her and didn't intend to cause her harm or stress.

Also, I didn't even consider quarantine. I have always quarantined any fish I purchase for my reef tanks, but it never dawned on me to do the same for Chams. It looks like I just learned another new lesson today, hopefully it won't bite me in the butt later.

time

When she inflates and gapes at him is a good time to seperate. Some i seperate immediately after, others who are more friendly to each other, i may leave until the next morning. I have noticed that panthers like to breed almost immediately after waking up together. Make sure to familiar with a pair before trying though. Stress and injury are real possible.

Thank you all for the help. I do have another question for you all though. I know that it is best to keep each baby in its own cage, but this can get VERY expensive. If I was looking to breed on a large scale, I could understand making the investment, but not as a hobbyist.

That being said, How many babies would you say is safe to keep in a 16x16x20 cage. I know they would need to be split up into smaller groups as they grow and eventually individually past 3 months. I am simply trying to plan and start buying and setting everything up for them. I know there is a lot to do, and I want to make sure it is ready well in advance of them hatching in the next 7-12 months.

Thank you all in advance for your help.
