IMO, I dont think there is a problem on having the baby in a big cage from the beginning IF you can keep an eye on him. when my 2 veileds were babies (2-3 months) I had them in the same cages I have them in now, 2X2X4' cages. I also free ranged the crickets but made sure they ate them. I stayed there watching them hunt the crickets. I have never cup fed my chams (i think it makes them lazy). I was careful with their supplements and was always watching them. they are doing fine now at 18 months old.
