question about my veil

I have and almost 9 mos old male veil. he has been eating fine since we got him . up to 20-24 small crickets a day. well last nite i had to take 5 live crickets out of his cage. as i awas doing this he started hissing at me and getting fairly upset. ever since then he is acting really strange. Hanging out at the bottom of the cage. Sometimes when he is walking he will grab his head and then of corase he has a problem hanging onto what ever he is trying to get onto. He will let me hold him. He has no interest in food has drank some water. I am now leaving him alone. I did talk to the breeder i got him from and she said that it seems like he is stressed from the crickets still being in his cage and then also me removing them. He is mainly green and brown. Evernow and then he will turn black and white. And his head is sometimes gray. I took him outside for a few min and he seemd okay with that. He pretty much lays in my hand, he used to crawl up my arm like crazy but today he just lays really close to me. I am hoping that he is going to be okay and survive he is actually my 8 yr old son's pet He just seems out of sorts if you know what i mean. She slao told me to handle him more often so that he is used to it. We have only been handlinghim 1 x a week when my husband cleans the cage.

i will try and get some pics of him later as right now he is hiding kind of under and behind a leaf

your chameleon has MBD.
His back legs are bowed.
What kind of UVB light you use? Is there a glass on the top of the cage or some kind of plastic wrapped on the bulb?
BTW, He needs to be in a screen cage.

So far i am not finding any vets available to look at my Cham. I feel so bad watching him suffer. It doesn't help that i am pg as i am normally not this emotional.

We are in ILon the wisconsin boarder

He has a screen top on his cage. The uvb bulb is one that is in a black plastic kind of holder
Howdy,

It's 99% certain to be MBD. He has all of the classic symptoms of an advanced case of it. Some of those bones are broken and can be set. It will take time to heal but he may be able to recover enough to manage on his own again. Grabbing at his own face is another classic symptom. A vet can prescribe the proper treatment, including liquid calcium and, at some point in the treatment, injections to pull-in calcuim more efficiently into his system.

Is there still a clear plastic lens covering the UVB tube. If so then that is your "smokng gun" :(.

What part of the world are you located?

First did you remove the plastic cover from your uvb light? I missed it the first couple of days I had mine. Second until you get him to a vet, you need to try and feed him by hand. Mine will sit in my hand and eat crickets also if he stops drinking you will have to force water into him. I got mine when he had bad MBD but he is improving. Hope he does okay.

In the mean time the breeder has told me to give him liquid calcium which i can not find at any local pet store and also to force feed him. I deluted his calcium with water and have gotten him to take some of that but i can not get him to open his mouth for food. She said to try wax worms as they are easier to hold onto and something different for food and that maybe he will be more likely to eat.

Liquid calcium you have to get from the vet. As for the feeding issue try repta-aid by fluker you should be able to find it at the pet store. If not they should have some type of emergency food you can get. After a couple of days he should eat by hand. It has a syringe and you force his mouth open gently but firmly.

So far i was able to now get him to take one wax worm coated in his supplement powder. And he seems to like the deluted calcium powder out of a syringe

Have you found a vet yet?

That is an advanced case of MBD. He's not acting properly at all anymore. If his legs, ribs etc are not broken yet, they might end up breaking because his bones are too brittle & it can cause organ damage.

You need to get him to the VET ASAP that has experience with chams. That cham is in pain!

Dave Weldon provided a link to the exotic vets. I had to drive 2 hrs just to get mine to an experienced one.

Read this from this website:

http://www.chameleonsdish.com/health/commonproblems.htm

"In the meantime, provide UVB lighting and a proper diet. (Never attempt to treat a severe case by feeding an animal calcium supplements. Simply overloading an animal's stomach with supplements over a short period of time not only won't help, it can cause organ damage, and potentially death.) Unless the case is extremely minor, the assistance of a qualified reptile veterinarian is necessary for effective treatment. A veterinarian will be able to determine the best course of action, and will administer emergency injections of calcium and/or vitamin D3."

If you can't provide the care that he needs, I would advise you not to give the cham to a pet shop but find someone who can take care of him that has experience with chameleons. Maybe post an ad in the classifieds here on chameleon forums or something.

Well, first of all he should be in a screened cage:( Not a glass one cause it gets too hot, and theres no ventilation. I also think you NEED to get him to the vet ASAP. Youll need to change things to make sure he lives a happy life though. Good luck.
