Quads Showin off

I got a couple of my quad males to show off for the girls today. It is so hard to get pics of these. As soon as you open the cage they are straight down into the plant. Unless you have a girl for them, then it's game on!;)

Am I right if i say this is the quadricornis gracilior?
I have quad. quadricornis and see the difference in side pattern (blue on top) and behind the head. Also the horns are slightly different. It's a handsome little guy ;)

i'm curious about what eszzie asked too. I just always assumed mine was a quad quad, but I dont really know the difference between the two. are those guys pretty big? mine doesn't have horns that large or such prominent sails. amazing pics by the way.

My quad male looks exactly the same, only the pattern on the side is different and the blue is missing. Also the graciliors can have 6 horns instead of 4 with Quad. quadricornis

I like the sound of quad quad

Very handsome guys you have there. And a good pictures. Nicely done.

I find it very hard to photograph their behaviors without disturbing them, so I mostly don't try. I'll try to get a pic of my guy flashing color up here tomorrow.

On the identity: I think the six-horned pattern is not definitive on the subspecies. I have the original article describing the subspecies, but its in German, which I do not sprecken! From what I can decipher, the graciliors are slighter, with smaller sails and crests, more often have two horned males. Locality is really needed to positively assign a ssp.

My guy does have very large amounts of blue, depending on his mood. His side-of-body pattern is identical to one of the males above. The positively ID'ed males of gracilior I have seen have a different pattern and the scalation behind the head is also distinctly different.

I'm curious to hear what the Europeans view is on the subspecies. Eszzie, can you put up a picture of your guy? Celine has a really beautiful male she has shown here and here.

Cheers on your well-captured guys, Cham Nation

hm, mine looks nothing like the pics of the gracilior DGray posted, I also think FLChams would specify something like that. I dont know if the sail is so much less noticeable because he's a little young, or its just the way he is.

Hi there, I believe I've read in a book by Petr Necas that they can have 6 horns, but it is different per animal. Some can develope 2, 4 or 6 horns. I will have to check the book again for what it exactly said.
Here some pics of my guy:

Wow, thats nice! again very dragon-like with the sail formation, my guy is very low-key in that respect. to me, it looks like he really has no sail at all on his back. he makes up for it with his coloration, IMO

The chams in this thread from Eszzie and Chameleon Nation are of Trioceros quadricornis quadricornis. The horns of T. q. gracilior are relatively longer and narrower then in T. q. quadricornis and the sailfin is shorter and tappers into the tail more smoothly.

@ Chris

I was already sure abou mine being Quadricornis quad. After some searching I see the gracilior has a big yellow spot behind his head, whats missing in the picture of Chameleon Nation, but how do you explain the blue? I have never seen this by any quadricornis.

mine has a large yellow spot on top of his head, and in his normal, relaxed coloration, he always has sort of sky blue colored dots on his body (you can see them a little in the avatar)

Eszzie - I've seen a number over the years with blue like that. It may be a locale thing within the subspecies or just individual variation but the morphology definitely indicates it is also T. q. quadricornis.

Satch - When I saw and photographed yours before you got it, I remember that it was definitely also T. q. quadricornis but it seemed to have a little bit of a blue hue.

Chris

From what i know usually T. q. quadricornis can have 2 or 4 horns while T. q. gracilior from 4 to 6.. it's correct or it's an old knowledge? really nice males anyway!!! :D
