Proper Panther Basking Spot

There seems to be a bit of difference in basking spots for panthers I've read online. I've been reading in some cases that panthers are much more sensitive and should only have up to 90 degrees in a basking spot. Other cases I've read that adults or "larger" panthers should have a basking temp of 105 or so?

So Is it with size they may need a higher temp? Or are they generally more sensitive? I've read all sorts of threads and there aren't really any educated answers saying WHY it should be that temp. Thanks to anyone who can help clarify

90-95 is fine if you have a diagonal branch so they can choose if they want to be 80-95 and not stuck with either cool at 75-80 or stuck at 95. My 2 basking branches go from the floor to almost the ceiling directly under the basking light so he can choose what ever he wants. I checked with a probe, and he can only get his head a little above 95 on a hot day if he crawls all way to the top of the tank. My basking fixure is sitting on the screen and sunken into the fixture about 3".

The only thing that would want a 105 basking spot would be an iguana or a monitor, thats way too high for most shade tropical lizards. Chameleons are not full sun at all.

Alright good, 95 was the max that I was allowing him. I've basically been trying to let him decide how much he wants, like you said. The website (http://chamownersweb.net/husbandry/care_sheet_panther.htm) with the "105" quote isn't up anymore - go figure :p

Thanks for the clarification

I have read in many places that a temp of 100 deg is not unheard of with chameleons. I stand corrected if wrong, as I only let Jack up to 93 or so...

I got my one chameleon from Kammerflage Kreations. They bask their panthers high at around the 95- 100 degree mark for adults. I live in Florida and they can take the heat more than you think. They just have to have a place to get out of the heat when they want to. Basically if they are not gaping constantly then they are ok.

Im on the other end I keep my panthers cooler, about 90 ist he hottest for adult males and the cage drops to about 70 by the floor.

Interesting to hear the varied temps. I wonder even more now what kind of temps they see in the wild on average?
